Quotes on Fear

sermonindex Jan 31, 2020

"Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear."
- Corrie Ten Boom

"If you fear God, you really need fear nothing else."
- Zac Poonen

"Imagination frames events unknown, in wild, fantastic shapes of
hideous ruin, And what it fears, creates."

"Only he who can say, "The Lord is the strength of my life" can
say, "Of whom shall I be afraid?""
- Alexander MacLaren

"How very little can be done under the spirit of fear."
- Florence Nightingale

"Fear imprisons, faith liberates; fear paralyzes, faith empowers;
fear disheartens, faith encourages; fear sickens, faith heals; fear
makes useless, faith makes serviceable."
- Harry Emerson Fosdick

"Our lives are full of supposes. Suppose this should happen, or
suppose that should happen; what could we do; how could we
bear it? But, if we are living in the high tower of the dwelling place

quiet from the fear of evil, for no threatenings of evil can penetrate
into the high tower of God."

us, His arm over us, His ear open to our prayer - His grace sufficient,
His promise unchangeable."

around us."
- Woodrow Kroll

Greg, I'm surprised that you would quote Harry Emerson Fosdick, a notoriously liberal, "modernist" preacher in his day.

In a May 1922 sermon, "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" Fosdick replied by repudiating the core beliefs of the fundamentalist faith: belief in the virgin birth was unnecessary; the inerrancy of Scripture, untenable; and the doctrine of the Second Coming, absurd.

He also rejected creationism, promoting theistic evolution instead, and was an active anti-Zionist.

I thought his was the best one! I didn’t need to delve into his entire history. to recognize it as a helpful and inspiring quote. Bruce Lee had some good ones too- like "Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”

Anytime someone in ministry uses a quote without a caveat or disclaimer it is a tacit approval of the person cited, and what he or she stood for.

Since all things pertaining to life and godliness are found in the Scriptures I usually don't quote anything else.

As for Bruce Lee's statement it has its Biblical antecedents. Bruce grew up with a mixture of Catholicism and Buddhism, but was a self-proclaimed atheist.

There's no one more afraid than the 'liar' himself.
