People will say anything.

I have come to realize that my knowledge of WW2 is quite inadequate. Recently I was reading about how some Hutterites who had just completed their university training in Germany, returned to their community in Paraguay hopeful that Hitler would bring reform and welcome them back into the country after centuries as strangers in other nations. They were amazed at speeches like this. I had never heard of this aspect of Hitler’s propaganda but only his attack on true believers. I think that there are many evangelicals today that could be deceived by speeches like this and but for the grace of God, I could get caught up in it too. Situations like this show where one’s treasure truly is. Like the Paraguayan Hutterites, it’s possible to be physically out of your land and spend every waking hour working towards a spiritual goal but still hold reservations and hope in earthly powers.

There is a story Leonard Ravenhill tells about a missionary returning to the US by steamer. His son who has never seen the US wonders why his father is so longing for the US. Ravenhill’s point was about seeing true revival but the story could also reveal the soulish connection to a land which is what those Hutterites felt when they were in Germany. It is fair to say that this is in all of us and is a natural longing.

In the account of the Hutterites, it is the group who has just escaped Nazi Germany that puts their longings into perspective. They recounted to them the cost of living according to the Word in Nazi Germany. The Christianity Hitler described was at best an abstraction of the nominal religion God had set them free from. This group came as an example of what very early Anabaptists had been like, persecution and all. In this day and age, we not only need voices like that but to be it ourselves so that we too won’t get swept in.
