Hello.What am I missing here? I don't belive God contridicts Himself.Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Mat 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Mat 23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift So is He saying you should not call people fools unless you have a reason? I'm sure I'm not the first to have this question. What does everyone think?

I believe the word "angry" is the keyword that distinguishs what type of use for the word fool. The latter two verses speak to people as fools that are void of the knoweldge of God and seek after gain (even spiritual) in ways that are wrong, when they are so clearly prescribed rightly by God's Spirit.Where the first verse mentioned shows that we should not use this title upon anyone wrongly, I believe in scripture God is the one that calls people fools clearly and maybe this is His place only?

Sometimes there might indeed be a reason to call somebody a fool. The idea behind what Christ said about calling another foolish is simply a endictment against cutting other people down, and being a slanderer. The intent is nothing other than to harm. When Christ used the term, it was an attempt to bring light to these men and show them the error of their ways, it was not to simply slander them.

Yeah thats pretty much the conclusions I have made, but was wondering if anyone has expounded on it. Ecc 7:9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Seems to go along with what Jesus said.

Hi thereMaybe the key words in Mat 5.22 are 'with his brother' . We should not be calling true brothers and sisters in the Lord 'fool'.Just a thought!

The bible seems to use the word 'fool' for those who have left God out of their calculations. It is never right to use the word in impatience but as a description of the man who has not taken God into consideration it is appropriate.

You guys are right about the "anger" part. There's 6 different greek words translated as "fool" or fools in the N.T.. 781 - unwise878 - mindless, ignorant, egotistic, rash, unbelieving, unwise. 3912 - to misthink, that is, be insane (silly) 3471 - to become insipid; figuratively to make (passively act) as a simpleton - lose savour.453 - unintelligent, by implication sensual, unwise. Luk 24:25 3474 - dull or stupid, heedless, blockhead, absurd. 3474 Used in - Matt 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. ("Raca" means Worthless, found only used in this verse.)Same word #3474 is used in these verses too, for ..... foolish, 7Mat_7:26, Mat_25:2-3 (2), Mat_25:8, 1Co_1:27, 2Ti_2:23, Tit_3:9fools, 3Mat_23:17, Mat_23:19, 1Co_4:10fool, 2Mat_5:22, 1Co_3:18foolishness, 11Co_1:25( 6 different 'fool' words in O.T. too - 5528 - 5530 - 5036 - 1984 - 3684 - 191. Prov. 17:21 uses first 3684 then 5036 in one verse.)So just don't call someone a Blockhead "in Anger". :lol:
