On another thread Greg posted some maxims for Christian living from St. Benedict.
One of those was "to love fasting”
I made the comment "I assume by "love” he meant willing to do it. If a person truly loves fasting it sort of defeats the purpose.”
Greg replied:
"I think he would mean to allow it to be enjoyable rather then a suffering. Fasting is a means to an end. Not an end in itself.”
I wanted to start a new thread because I thought it was worthy of further discussion.
I am not sure I disagree with Greg’s comment. I agree with it on the level that we should be willing to fast- perhaps even look forward to it- but I don’t think we should love the process because fasting is supposed to make your flesh sting and not be something you would enjoy- in other words you are supposed to suffer.
