I really enjoy reading Christian biographies. I enjoy reading about the lives of men and women of God who experienced powerful conversions or who served God under difficult circumstances. Their stories serve to inspire, quicken and convict. I'm always searching for more biographies and books concerning the faith of others. Do you have a select list of biographies or autobiographies that you would recommend? Please list as many of them as you wish. If possible, please include the title of the book (and authors for biographies). Here are a few that have meant alot to me (in no particular order of importance):1. The Autobiography of Charles Finney2. No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green by Melody Green and David Hazard 3. The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson (with John and Elizabeth Sherril)4. God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew (with John and Elizabeth Sherril)5. The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom (with John and Elizabeth Sherril)6. Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners by John Bunyan (author of Pilgrim's Progress)7. David Livingston: His Labours and His Legacy by Arthur Montefiore8. William and Catherine: The Life and Legacy of the Booths: Founders of the Salvation Army by Trevor Yaxley and Carolyn Vanderwal9. Hudson Taylor by J. Hudson Taylor10. Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand

I heartily recommend Arnlod Dallimore's "George Whitfield" by Arnold Dallimore. Its absolutely awesome. Also I recently read "Life and Times of Howell Harris" by Edward Morgan. Harris was a man of incredible zeal and sound doctrine. If you can find "Daniel Rowland" by Eifion Evans grab that one as well. He was said to be equaled only by Whitfield in the pulpit. Sadly few of his sermons remain. For some great sketches of these men and others get "Christian Leaders of the 18th century by J.C. Ryle. The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists were some of the most awesome preachers I've had the thril to read about! I'd encourage all hands to study the doctrine they preached and contrast it with the likes of Finney. Enjoy!

Thank you for all of these suggestions! I have just ordered a biography of George Whitfield. I am looking for one of Amy Carmichael -- so if you can think of a good one, let me know! :-)

i would recommend the biography of robert c chapman.it was written by robert l peterson and is available through lewis and roth publishers.this man lived in the 1800's and was an incredible godly pattern.he was a very humble man and became a servant to the body of Christ.he was a close friend of george muller and hudson taylor.charles spurgeon called him "the saintliest man i ever knew"he lived out the christian life in practical ways that have forever impacted my life!he said"its not my bussiness to see that others love me,but it is my bussiness to see that i love others-also,if my brothers approve of me im thankful,if they do not im not dissapointed". "pride is the secret of division, and humility the secret of fellowship".

Also a couple of others..."William Grimshaw of Haworth" by Faith Cook, John Wesley said " a few men such as him would make a nation tremble." Also "Jonathan Edwards a New Biography" by Iain Murray is awesome!Furthermore I'd highly recommend "Complete Works of Edward Payson" a 3 volume work. The Sprinkle Publications version includes a foreword by Leonard Ravenhill, who reminds us that Payson had the camel knees from much time before the Throne of Grace. The memoir by Asa Cummings, which is in the first volume, was considered the finest memoir of a Christian of the first half of the nineteenth century. Incidentally, all three volumes are available from Solid Ground Christian books for 39.95. I hope you find these books profitable reading.
