TEXT: JOHN 9:4

''I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.''

What are the works, in this text, that our dear Lord 'must work while it is day? Please note, that our text ensued out of a miracle performed on a man born blind: take pain to go through the 1st to the 3rd verses of the 9th chapter. Since our Lord mentioned 'works', it is safe to say that bringing sight to the blind is one of the works. Of most importance, the bodily miracles of our Lord on the diseased and demoniac in scripture, are amongst other things, to illustrate His miracles on the souls of men. Every man was born spiritually diseased: blind, poor, weak, crippled, lamed, &co. The Lord came to give the world sight! Every inhabitant or citizen of this world stands blind until Christ gives him sight. Little wonder that the world glories in what she is supposed to be ashamed of: glorying in her shame --- what a madness. It is a token of spiritual blindness to be careless with the use of means of gaining grace, like prayer, hearing and reading: but solicitous in running after things that debase us as higher being. He who breaks God's law, is blind: for in keeping the law, man shows himself as rational and clear-sighted being. So, Christ resolved to abide and abound in the work of restoring spiritual sight to all who cannot see. Dear brothers, there is no eye-salve for the blind world than the teaching of the undiluted word of God. The test of every sermon is its intrinsic power to open the eyes of men, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Christ: Acts 26:18. Friends, in all of our zealous sermonising, are men's eyes opened to their depravity and vanity? Do our sermons, even never so deliver with zest and applauded by men, open their eyes to see heaven's beauty and the ugliness of hell?
