Pilgrim, fear not to go slowly;
But to stand still, fear so wholly!
Pilgrim, keep thy face straight:
Keep thy eyes on the pearly gate!
Pilgrim, give not thy heart to gold--
Trust it not as thy sure stronghold!
At what time thy heart praiseth thee,
Oh, pilgrim, a fall thou mayest soon see!
Pilgrim, walk lowly; be self-abasing:
And God shall be to thee, ever-assisting!
Pilgrim, after another's, lust not:
Be thou content with thy life-lot!
Pilgrim, if thy wife she not is,
Study never to secure her kiss ---
For a drink from another's spring,
Sendeth into conscience a hellish ping!
So pilgrim, to her, give not your face:
Lust not after her beauty and grace!
In thy bosom, carry a coal of fire,
And thou shalt a dire burnt acquire!
Pilgrim, be sane, and well-balanced---
Strive to be sound doctrine; well-placed!
Oh, Pilgrim, in all that thou doest,
After-here thoughts'ld in thy heart rest!
