Because Christ came to my sight;
For beholding the truest of light,
See how loosely my soul hold
Silver and gold, nay, riches untold!
What would not fade from his eyes,
Who has with Christ secured a ties?
Could he be charmed by aught,
On whose eyes eternal glory is wrought?
Nay! as the stars run into hiding,
When the sun's empire is rising:
Thus things terrestrial, take their flight,
At the reign of Christ, the celestial knight!
Oh, come! oh ever be before my face:
Else the world and self me abase ---
What shall I be to these, but a vassal!
Stay my eyes on thee! O, on me fall!
Allow that, when these eyes dieth,
And worms make them their diet,
I mayest them open in thy breast;
Beholding thy face ever, a true rest!
Amen!
