Day always, it was not,
With our fathers, O pilgrims ---
Today full silo; next, a dry pot;
Bright awhile; shortly, no beams!
Refrain:
It shall not always be day:
Pilgrims on thy heart, this lay!
While the earth is, day and night;
Summer and winter, none can fight.
The sun her courses runeth;
Melting ices; refreshing greens:
Yet patching dry the earth---
Full of mixture, is life's scenes!
Armed then thy mind with this:
The bans shall not always be full!
Sky shall not oft our desires kiss:
Variegated seasons're beautiful!
Earth hath valleys and mountains;
Beasts wild, and doves innocent,
From whence man seeth gains ----
That life is not a single sweet moment!
I then live day by day joyfully,
In deep sorrow; or happiness;
Receiving all from God's sovereignty ---
Frowns or smile, are all of His goodness!
