Thou chief of dark tricks,
On thy cup I shall not my eyes fix ----
Though golden, it houseth poison ----
For thou givest venom in golden noggin!
Feigned honey, is sin's harbinger:
But on her heel, a crying sepulcher:
In iniquity's sweetness,
Lieth a crippling ocean of bitterness!
Never shall the saints' foe
Come to them as that child of woe:
But as angel of light, doth he appear ---
A fiend in a garb of a friend dear!
As ever a pilgrim would master
This ill emir and Hades' grandmaster,
He must need beg for sobriety,
Vigilance and pure propriety!
Thou chief of tricks dark,
Jesus I put forth; I'll abide at His back:
What canst thy fiery darts come by,
When and if on Christ I rely?
Thou shalt never me outwit:
Wisdom from above is my meat ---
On God's Son, His wisdom, I feed!
Thy malice shall graces in me breed
More than conqueror I am ---
Cuddled with an everlasting arm!
The world, sin and flesh, my conquest:
My soul, make melody ever in thy breast!
Amen.
