PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH MILITANT

Most merciful and loving Father of light,
From thy church here, cast out night
As thou doest to that Church above ---
Which hast known thy full love;

Company of spirits made perfect,
That she might the earth truly affect
With her shines: Oh, Trim her lamp;
War against her frost and damp;

And quench not this smoking flax:
But let her hot, fiery, and burning wax!
Remove from thy Church all that offend;
And give to her the right and good end ---

Give her teaching priests;
Chase away from her foamy yeasts;
Till thou comest to lovingly grant
Her oneness with the church triumphant!
