Silent labour, a duty done out of sight;
Quiet working, act not for nature's light:
This hath eye on God as its rewarder:
No trumpet sounded before and after!
Refrain:
Silent labour, a labour majestic,
Glorious, praise-worthy and domestic--
Done in the closet before God,
Who, in the open give them reward!
Away then to that labour before God--
A kind that hath Christ as its only prod,
Yea, constraineth by His love alone;
Fuel not by fame, lucre and ambition!
Oh to fear man's praise and applause!
Oh that I vainly desire not great cause;
Having eyes on great works and duties
Out of a heart full of trifles and vanities!
Like Aaron and Hur, I should gladly
Be content to hold up Moses' joyfully;
Water, like Bananas, what Paul planteth;
And like Anna, in prayer cry and sweat!
Ever praying and yearning for the Church's
Consolation, redemption, and daily Lurches.
Quietly may I pray, teach and live out
Grace before friends and foes about!
Amen!
