A Christian's Secret of a Happy Life (article series)

Is your life all you want it to be? Hannah Whitall Smith--Quaker holiness minister of the 19th century, rebel, realist--faced life as she found it, and she found it good. She took her Bible promises literally, tested them, and found them true as tested steel. Here she reveals the secret--how to make unhappiness and uncertainty give way to serenity and confidence in every day of your life. I am currently reading through this devotional classic A Christian's Secret of a Happy Life by Hannah Whitall Smith and couldn't continue without sharing this treasure I have found with you through posting the excerpts I have chosen in different articles. My experience so far, as I've been reading, has been inspiring, encouraging, edifying, and applicable. I hope you will be blessed as I have been.Part 1: Is It Scriptural?Part 2: Complete Deliverance From SinPart 3: Man's Part and God's PartPart 4: Burdenless, Restful and CarefreePart 5: Good Gifts From a Loving GodPart 6: Faith Before FeelingPart 7: No Excuse For a Lack of FaithPart 8: Our Emotions vs. Our WillPart 9: Discerning the Guidance That Comes From Godcheck back frequently for additional articles (last updated 9/30/05)...

Yolanda I am very excited with this new article series you are starting. I know it will stimulate much great conversation and also just the articles themselves will be very edifying the general public of SI. "For he that is dead is freed from sin." (Romans 6:7). What a beautiful topic of holiness and victory in the Christ led life. May many enter into this life as we read and meditate on these precious truths.

Hi Yolanda,I read this book a couple of years ago and I really loved it. Nice to see it on here. One of my favorite parts is in the third chapter: The Life Defined. I won't give it away, but it was about a man bending under a heavy burden- and the illustration is wonderful. I made it into an article once :-) Hope you really enjoy the rest of the book!In Him, Chanin

There seems to be a good response to these articles. Not so much in comments, but in views. I haven't posted any personal comments to the 3 articles now, that I've posted, but I will share with you now that as I've been going through this book, I've found that I have been in a place in my life where the practical truths discussed in each chapter are things I've had to excercise and apply to my own life. Trust is something I've been really lacking lately. My life has been mostly ruled by emotions and circumstances lately. But these words of Hannah Whitall Smith have been so refreshing. In the 4th article that I'll be posting, you will read about rest and giving up your burdens to God. This too I have had to apply to my life. How faithful God has been! What seemed lifeless and hopeless, God has been faithful to redeem and restore as I've placed my emotions and my "problems" into His hands. Again, I have been so encouraged by this book, and I expect you will find encouragement, comfort, and hope from these articles.

Hi Yolanda, hmmmm. My copy is not layed out like yours is. The part I was refering to that is in Chapter 3 in my book and called The Life defined" is actually part 4 in your book. Probably different publishers :-) Keep up the good work!ysiC-Chanin

Probably different publishers moreofHimI know, the way I'm posting the articles doesn't match the chapters perfectly. That's because in chapter one, I divided the chapter into two different articles. Plus, I don't want to give people too much to read all at once in one article. Each chapter has a bunch of subjects within it... so... sometimes I've combined ideas and have come up with my own subject title inspired by what I read. And of course, I'm not posting everything that's in the book! I'm sure, technically, copyright laws have already been broken. If people want to read the whole thing, they'll need to get the book for themselves.

A Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, Part 6: Faith Before Feeling is now up! Sorry for not getting these articles up on quite a regular basis as I had originally planned to. Before I leave Canada for a week, I thought I'd make the effort to post another one. I will keep posting articles as I read through this book. Hope you're still being blessed.

Here are some replies I received from a couple senior saints concerning an email I sent out to church family and friends, encouraging them to check out this article series and the other great resources that are offered on this site. I thought these emails would bring encouragement.---------------------------------------------------------I know all about this book and several of her others. I've been reading "A Christian's Secret of a Christian Life" and "God Is Enough" (both daily devotionals) as part of my everyday spiritual walk for more than thirty years. I absolutely concur with you that her words are a tremendous encouragement. For many years, I was able to share the latter book with several others, but, alas, it went out of print for several years. Then, I found it, once again, but just for a short time. I'm very anxious to check, now that you've told me about Greg Gordon. If you can find "God Is Enough", I'm certain you would find it a great, great comfort. If you have a chance, ask Ginny about it. I was able to share a book with her and it has become one of her very favorites. Thanks for the website. I'll certainly check it out. Celia---------------------------------------------------------Thank you, Yolanda.I read them and found them to be very gently told. I might refer my niece to them.May the Lord bless you. Sincerely in Him, Chuck---------------------------------------------------------
