''Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.''
Trust in God can not be divorced from constancy in prayer; that trust in God that does not creat in us a bias for constant supplications and prayers night and day before God, is a pretended sort. In bringing a man to a place of complete trust in God, which natural effect is constancy in prayers, God usually severs him from all ties and renders him desolate; all human helps being removed far away from him: He makes him, as it were, a widow indeed. Nothing robs us of trust in God like the availability of human help. The readiness of creatures to assist a believer, may prove a stunt in the growth of his faith. Who can look up or abroad, when his bans and granary are full with corns and bread? Who can pray, 'Give us our daily bread' when there still remain oil in his cruise and bread in his vessel? If our actual sense of helplessness does not rock us into the arms of trust and prayerfulness, then nothing else can really bring us on our knees. God would have us full of faith and trust in Him; He wishes us wholly given up to prayer: for nothing immediately brings us to Him as does prayer. He sweeps off our creatures comforts some times, so that He could have our attention all to Himself. To be continued.
