TEXT: PSALM 90:12
''So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.''
This life, as it were, is the currency wherewith a man purchase his eternal estate in the next world: a merchant that is prodigal with his medium of exchange whilst in a far away country, would doubtlessly come home ashamed and poor. Actually man is quick to forget this crucial truth; this knowledge must take a deep root in every man that care to approach the Judge of the whole earth at the close of his transient life here on earth. Man is not always aware that he is bound to make judicious use of every of his minutes to the glory of God and the betterment of his eternal estate. Man must be taught how to make his life here on earth count with God; no man that redeems his time in putting them into good use, who is not so taught by God. No day is truly spent in the eye of God, which is not used to bring God to man, and man to God. To make our days count, it is to spend them on that which outlive this ebbing life. It were better a man is not born, than to be given existence, but dies without clearing his interest in the other world. He is dead, whilst alive, who spend not his days on the welfare of his soul and that of others. Friends, if God does not teach us how to spend our days, they would be squandered on fragile beautiful flowers and vanity; so we need pray with Moses: 'teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.' Amen
