Andrew Murray's Works

I have been blessed by some of Andrew Murray's teachings. I am amazed at how much he wrote. If you look on amazon it just seems like never-ending titles of books. It makes me wonder if his materials are getting published by different publishers who are changing the titles of books but a lot of the content is the same. Or maybe even sometimes the same publisher doing this. I know this type of thing can happen.I also know there are some compilation volumes. Does anybody have some kind of reference about Murray's works? Like a comprehensive listing? Also, wouldn't it be nice if he had a "Complete Works"? I feel like it would sell real well. There seems to be a lot of respect for this man's writings throughout different streams in the Church.

I agree, Todd. I have also wished for a "complete works" of Andrew Murray's books. I would jump at the chance to buy such a set. I have recieved untold help from Murray's books.One bit of advice I would give you regarding his titles - very many of those 400+ books you find on Amazon are part of a large series with fancier covers that have been "edited for the contemporary reader." Whatever that means, I wouldn't even bother with these. Besides the fact that I just don't want other people editing what I read and tampering with classics, I have looked at several and found entire chapters missing.I do have a list of Andrew Murray's books as published in his "official biography". I'll post it a little later.

Thank you all for your help. So I'm not the only one confused by all of this Murray madness. That's kind of relieving and kind of frustrating. How did this happen? I appreciate the lists that have been offered, but it seems unlikely that we will be able to offer an authoritative listing like this. Because it's been said that even some of the same titles have been edited, and how are we to know? This could take awhile to figure out. I'm also curious, why wouldn't the list in Murray's biography be comprehensive of all his works? That would have been very helpful. Why would they leave anything out? Also, I'm hoping to also list some of the compilation volumes. Such as "Andrew Murray on Prayer" which I understand has 6 of his books in one volume.I understand it includes:1. Abide in Christ2. The Prayer Life3. Waiting on God4. With Christ in the School of Prayer5. The Ministry of Intercession6. The Secret of Intercession I also believe that "God's Best Secrets" is a compilation volume but I'm not sure what books are included in it. I also believe there are other compliations like this. It would be helpful if anyone could list them.

I think I remember some people saying he never wanted his works to be sold for profit of something so they are upset about it. But I'm not really sure about the situation. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Is there an authoritative list of TAS's complete works? I've seen some of the volumes, but I don't think I've seen a whole set advertised for sale. I am interested in buying his works as well.

I just realized that I purchased a Murray book within the last few weeks at the Christian book store. I have it here in front of me. The title is "The Believer's Call to Commitment." Then the subtitle says, "A devotional study of Ephesians presented for today's reader." On the back it says, "Andrew Murray wrote this devotional study- first published in 1909 as Aids to Devotion..."I don't think this version (Bethany, 2005) is listed on Amazon, but I did find a Bethany, 1983 version. The description even for that version 22 years ago says:Originally titled Aids to Devotion, this study on Ephesians focuses on the Holy Spirit and Christian commitment. Writing nearly a century ago, Andrew Murray clearly teaches that commitment to Christ must be based not on determination but on complete dependence on the Holy Spirit. While retaining the author’s message and style, this edition has been carefully edited to update the language for the 21st century reader.(My bold- I think that sounds really good)So they've been updating the language for awhile. It seems pretty tricky to me in this 2005 version that I recently purchased. The subtitle, "Presented for Today's Reader" doesn't seem clear to me. I think when I bought it I just read that as meaning it's being republished for today's reader, not that the language has been edited. I don't see it mentioned anywhere else except in the publication data in small print on the copyright page. Maybe Whitaker doesn't do this. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to update the language. I think it might help many people. But I would like side notes, appendix, etc. showing the original language as well. I think that would be great. Just like how in the Bible sometimes there's a notation which is linked to a side note that gives the literal translation, etc.

I also just noticed 2 other publishers of his works that have updated the language. Barbour Publishing and Bridge-Logos. The Bridge-Logos description for Humility says, "Subheads added throughout the book to aid in following and understanding the text. Index of subheads to enable the reader to easily find material previously read."I'm not sure what this exactly means. It doesn't sound like it includes the original text, which is what I would really want. But it might. Does anyone have that version?

Austin-Sparks did not want his writings to be sold for profits. During his lifetime the books published by Witness & Testimony were sold at a very reasonable price, mainly to cover printing costs; but he never "made money" out of his books. The whole work was supported by gifts and donations from appreciative readers.Emmanuel Church, (see "Austin-Sparks Resources" thread in the TAS forum), republish his works free of charge; but I always encourage people who order from them to help them out financially, as this enterprise is quite expensive.It must also be noted that TAS did not want his works to be edited. Unfortunatly some publishers have done it.What I have done personally is to print everything that is put online on www.austin-sparks.net, and got the messages bounded in 100 pages volumes. In this way one can read them at leasure.Manfred
