Almost Christian

J
Jhonny97or Jun 15, 2023

I have discovered that I have been an almost Christian for the past 5 years. I'm 25 years old, and an extremely diligent almost Christian, which is what terrifies me the most. For those who are familiar with John Wesley's sermon, you know what I mean when I say that I have discovered that I am an almost Christian. I'm writing this just to ask for your support in prayer. My name is Jhonny Ordoñez, and I will be praying for God to pour His love into my heart and make me a partaker of the divine nature through His Spirit, as well as a participant in that faith that works through love. Saints, I ask that you pray for me.

Praying for you, Jhonny

Can anyone please post a link to the referenced sermon?

Praying, Jhonny97!

Dear Jhonny,
I would like to share with you my experience, long ago when I was an undergraduate, as it mirrors yours to some extent. I moved from what today would probably be called a "New Age" position to a (more or less!) Christian BELIEF. But I lacked your wisdom in seeing that I was "almost" Christian. I thought I had become the "real thing". Then, one evening I was having dinner with a friend in the University Union restaurant when the topic of conversation came around to spiritual matters. I said that I believed I had become Christian, but my friend disagreed! I might have Christian beliefs, but there was no sign of Christ in my life. That brought the truth home to me and I decided there and then that I had better do something about it. Following dinner, the path between the Union building and the Faculty of Arts block became my "Damascus Road"! About half way along the path, I stopped walking and said something like "OK Jesus, I accept you as Lord" then added "but don'e expect too much of me!". Maybe the most pathetic "decision" in Christian history, but God accepted it! It was like a load falling from my shoulders.
Even though I claimed to believe in justification by faith, in the practical sense I still thought in terms of "works" , which is why I felt that not much could be expected of me. But over the years I have experienced the work of Grace ... the fading of old ungodly desires and the rising of new ones in accord with God's will. I am convinced that the only thing we need "do" is just be open to the work of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. I pray that this will be your next step ... just ask Jesus to fill you with his Holy Spirit and allow the process of transformation to begin.
