In Paul's letters to the churches of Ephesus, Philippians, Colossians, and Thessolanica all point to the baseline reality that these churches are healthy in that they have clearly evident (to all) faith in Jesus and the promise of eternal life, their faithfulness to God and their love for all the saints. Such elements are clearly known to Paul and in some cases the whole Christian world. Consequently, Paul prays that they may receive a filling of spiritual wisdom and spiritual understanding in the knowing of God, the knowledge of His perfect or superior will, and the fruits of righteousness with power.
The very real implication of this truth is that the lack of faith and true genuine brotherly love in an individual or in a body will result in the failure of any prayer for Spirit filling in the form of spiritual wisdom, the knowing of his will or the opportunity for spiritual growth. So, any person or church that seeks to be filled with such grace or that expects to see teaching towards such things have the desired result without possessing clearly evident faith and brotherly love is on a foos errand.
This point is abundantly made clear in the letter to the church at Corinth where self focused immature Christians are incapable of spiritual wisdom or understanding and likewise incapable of spiritual growth and real fruit. Gifts maybe, but no fruit, no profit. The book of Hebrews ( chapters 6 and 10 specifically, ) make the same exact point. Failure to love and serve the saints as God intends for new and old Christian alike results in a failure of the rain (Spirit and truth) poured on the believer to produce fruit. Immaturity because of self focus produce thorns and thistles.
On a simpler level, God gives grace to the humble. Philippians defines humility to be a focus on others and not on self. A self focused church, believer, or even Gospel message which by definition doesn't have brotherly love or humility is doomed to fruitlessness and a Spiritless stumbling in the dark ( 1 John 1 ) without understanding, maturity or fruitfulness.
Paul could not write the church in Corinth the matters contained in the letter to the church in Ephesus. They couldn't handle, make use of it or spiritually apply it. All such knowledge would do is make matters worse by puffing them up with knowledge conceit. Nor do you see Paul praying for the church in Corinth for such wisdom and understanding or filing. First, they had to "clean house of self" and add sincere brotherly love. I'm certain that if they established the baseline health in the church, that then Paul could move on in their training and pray for them to have the discernment and understanding that leads to life.
I wonder how much more mature and filled with the Spirit church bodies would be if they had the baseline of spiritual health established ? I think our prayers for filling and solid teaching may be premature if the humility of the hearts of God's people founded in faith and brotherly or other love is not present. That isn't opinion though. Paul's letters clearly establish this principle.
Just to hammer the point home, if you look at the Gospel of John, Jesus focused on 3 things for His emerging church.....
Faith in Him, A new birth and a New Command , and finally, the giving of the Holy Spirit. These 3 are vitally connected to growth and maturity and the building of the church. Clearly evident faith, clearly evident brotherly love, and clearly evident outpourings of the Holy Spirit in wisdom, power, fruit and maturity.
