The Baptism of The Holy Ghost

Q
Quan2001 Aug 20, 2023

I yet had not experienced Gods fullness and powerful. I am a firm believer of full sanctification God purifying our whole being. I believe in Holiness separation from the world. Ive been asking God for the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. Why do you think he is making wait for this blessed experience. I WANT PENTECOST. OLD FASHIONED HOLY GHOST POWERFUL. WHY DO BELIEVERS have to tarry for this experience. I want God to possess by Mind and Personality. I want to be possessed by the Holy Ghost. What should I do?

Brother, find some mature Spirit filled believers to pray with you and help you. I believe that this short teaching by Derek Prince would be helpful to you.

I believe in Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Second blessing). I have personally experienced it myself and here is my understanding which I can also support with scripture.

All born again believers have the Holy Spirit living in them (1 Cor 12:3).

Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the experience when we are empowered with power on high (Acts 1:8). There is a difference between being a powerless Christian and a powerful Christian. But being empowered with Power does not mean we will not sin. It only means we will have power to overcome sin. We might still stand on our own righteousness at times and fall. It is a constant everyday battle to rest in God and abide in him.

In my life this experience came at the lowest point of my spiritual life. I was in the process of giving up Christ but instead of letting me go, Christ filled me up with his Spirit. From then on Bible became a different book, I had power to withstand certain besetting sins (which I never had before), power to confess Jesus as my Lord and savior even before those who mocked me for my faith.

I want God to possess by Mind and Personality. I want to be possessed by the Holy Ghost. What should I do?

To the disciples in the book of acts it was to patiently wait in the inner room. To each man God has a time and purpose. In my life the time was when I had to be broken to a level where I came to the realization that this Christian life was impossible for me to live.

Once a brother fell into a river with gushing water, the only brother who had skills to rescue him did not make any movement even after other brothers calling him for help. Finally after sometime this brother jumped into the water and rescued the drowning brother. Later when he was asked why he had to wait before trying to rescue, this brother answered that, he had to wait till the other brother stopped trying to fight against the current. If he had tried to rescue him while he was still fighting by his power, then both would have been drowned. Same way God waits till we come to an end of our own power and self righteousness. To the point we cry out that we are the wretched man who needs to be set free (Romans 7:24).

Even though I accepted myself to be wretched when I was born again, I always thought that if I was more focused and careful then I can be pure. But I came to a stage that no matter what I do, I cannot overcome certain sins because I am wretched. Only someone else has to rescue me from this Sin that is pulling me down constantly. I cannot swim against it anymore by trying to learn to swim, instead someone else should rescue me. That is when God filled me with his Holy Spirit. Hence all Glory is now to God and not to me.

If anyone comes to this realization then God will immediately fill him with His Holy Spirit. He is more eager to fill us than us seeking Him.

While I do not consider mine to have taken that long, I know of a sister who believes that hers dragged a bit. In her quest of finding someone who could successfully pray for/over her, she even encountered a poor brother who sought to teach her how to speak in tougues. However when God was finally satisfied and ready to grant, he filled her up just when she assayed to accept an envite for the laying-on of hands in one prayer meeting. And she knew it was it/done.

If I got him well, brother Sree's emphansy is on coming to the realization that one cannot corretly take on this Christian journey of themselves. If so, then I second that. What I would like to add is that God knows our respective hearts, motivations and the depth of our thirt for his filling. And would suggest you ask God to advise if he finds your heart fully consecrated, if he finds you free of selfish intents for the grace and whether your thirt be wide enough. I personally cannot think of a reason for God to delay this grace except for when a gap on a man's end exist. Either that of God not being satisfied that the vessel is thus fully empty/consecrated or that of having to be sufficiently sought for in prayer. And I would therefore agree (with brother Mike) that finding a pious someone to join forces with is also a step in the right direction.

Quan,

God will grant you the desires of your heart! He is not making you wait, "you" are probably in the way! What I mean by that is, we get all wrapped up in, "Will it be today? Why aren't I receiving it?"

When you are in your secret prayer closet praying or even in the shower, lying on your bed in the mid-night hour praying and you hear the Spirit praying a language inside your head you've never heard before, speak it out by faith! We walk by faith, brother!

You are not forgotten! He loves you!

Torrey’s writings on the Holy Spirit are quite useful 🙏🏻

Brother Fletcher, a link to the said resource(s) would be great.

According to Acts 2:37-39, a condition to repeant is suggested.

According to Acts 19:2-7, another condition together with the praying of a Godly someone is implied. This is similar to what happened in Samaria after the preaching of Philip. "When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,"

According to Luke 11:13, another condition to ask for this blessing in prayer is implied.

Here’s a link to search and read several pdf’s -

would suggest praying/asking the Lord which one to start with as He alone knows where a person is in their walk and what is needed to bring them to perfection-maturity. Although it has been quite a while since I have read by him, the memory of how helpful these resources are/were to me is still distinct.

regarding "how to receive” the baptism, I am not much help… as I was unaware of such a thing and without knowledge of the existence, I could not and did not ask for it but was commanded to "step forward and receive” by the Lord, which after a short debate on the absurdity of the situation, I did obey and did receive that which only He can give. This however occurred only after the Lord had categorically broken me down to a place of helplessness and desperation where in one instance prior to this day (sept 21st 2009) the Lord beat the crap out of me one night in a dream where when I woke up I could barely move from the pain and I physically bled. I honestly was beside myself with confusion and called my older brother (lay preacher in COC) who after hearing the dream/experience and my subsequent condition, began laughing heartily reminding me of Jacob wrestling w/the Lord/angel, which the acknowledgment of brought great peace and comfort to my spirit in spite of feeling as though I had been in a violent car crash, with my body stiff, sore, and generally lacking articulation all while my nose poured blood for no apparent reason. This is only mentioned here to make the point that there isn’t a "formula” to follow, rather a person to know, love/trust and obey…. honestly I can’t imagine a more unworthy person than myself to receive such a blessing but this blessing, if maintained, comes at a cost which is to say that if we are to keep that which is given and not grieve Him away, we must put ourselves, our hopes, our most valuable desires on the altar and submit the whole of it to His will not knowing wether He will exalt or debase us, tho in either case that His will be done in us. That’s where I was when He came to me and filled me to overflowing with His most precious gift… Himself 🙏🏻
Since that day, my life has never been the same and tho I have repeatedly failed His grace and made far too many missteps, He has to this day remained faithful and merciful towards me,… drawing me, leading me, teaching me to mortify my flesh that His spirit might be the exclusive source and end of all my doings.
While I can’t speak for anyone else, my experience has been exceedingly painful tho this is largely due to my obstinance and ignorance.
Currently, He has stirred that gift in ways that I joyfully submit to and gladly face the reproach of the world.
This is trustworthy, if we walk after the spirit of God the world will hate us, for His spirit is contrary to the world and at no point do the two find concordance, for the spirit that is in this world opposeth that which is of the Lord and seeks to exalt itself above all that is God. We have available to us mighty weapons to the pulling down of strongholds (in others) or any knowledge or pretense that exalts itself above the knowledge of Christ ✝️🙏🏻
If we are willing to lay hold, He will equip and instruct us, growing and strengthening us, opening our eyes to the responsibility for the authority He has given us, and in doing so we become partakes of His divine nature. Having eyes to see and ears to hear, we behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, as such we have confidence towards Him who is capable to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we could ever ask or even imagine 😇
At this point, I have only one concern… to please He who enlisted me as a soldier for we are indeed at war -

Be Strong
1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.
7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

I find it concerning there is no mention of faith, or the finished work of Jesus in this thread.

God is not the author of confusion.

Identification with the finished work of Jesus on calvary, and His resurrection and glorification, by faith, is the new testament way, nothing else.

K
KervinM Aug 25, 2023

Dear ESchaible, brother Quan mentioned: believe, believer and Believers on parts of his post. From this I can say that I and other thread participants assumed that this condition (which in fact the foundation) was fairly satisfied. But yes, far be it that Christ should thus be deprived of his glory in this regard.

@brother Fletcher, thank for the link. I think I remember my older brother reading a lot of R.A Torrery's works on the Holy Spirit. I just cannot remember if this was right around when he was in like manner seeking his own baptism. Which he eventually got in one prayer meeting we had. He could groan and pray in tongues therefrom.

I disagree with your assertion regarding NT being nothing else, in fact I’d say you missed it entirely 🤷🏽”â™‚️
Likewise your smug disposition and attempt to require others to garner your validation on a thread you’ve made no contributions to, other than to cynically criticize with the pompous opening line of "being concerned” that your personal views weren’t satisfied is itself very telling about your faith.
If you have such concerns and they are genuine, then follow the scriptural guidance and take it up with the Lord 🙏🏻

From my devotional thoughts thread:

"that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith"

Much is said about the reception of the Holy Spirit. Tarry here and loose your tongue until you speak some language you have never spoken. Tarry there and agonize and work up tears and conviction of sin and God might do something. Tarry with that person so he can do something that might work, and God might do something than. Pray harder and longer, surrender more completely, read that person's experience or that other guys, because my theology doesn't completely agree with the first one.

Our knowledge is our down fall. I heard it said that God made man in His own image, and man, ever the gentleman, returned the favor. Throughout scripture we see God acquiescing to sinful humans, even bearing their reproach when world around them sees Him like they would any other heathen god, decimating people groups and sniffing burning animals. So much of scripture is in fact what not to do, and I don't mean the "thou shalt nots", I mean the dim and foreshadowing ways Israel saw the God who would eventually tear the veil and finally reveal Himself completely in Jesus. We see bright spots in the prophets and others when they saw through the kings, judges, and law and foresaw the glorious savior. But those glimpses, at least those that are smack on the nose, are rare.

God is not what we make Him, but what he reveals Himself to be in Jesus. We can so easily look to the old covenant and think that God is pleased with those sacrifices and try to work up some new covenant system to emulate it, tarrying, praying, consecrating, and yet forget all about Jesus, who is God.

Why wasn't the Holy Spirit given? Because the believer didn't consecrated himself fully enough? Or was it because our tarrying wasn't long enough? Maybe because we didn't read that certain theologian and do exactly as he said?

The Holy Spirit wasn't given because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Once again man comes in with his intellect and says, "I guess I have to do something to glorify Jesus and I'll receive the Holy Spirit".

Jesus has been glorified for 2000 years. That is already accomplished. In the words of Jesus Himself, "It is finished".

He died, was buried, and rose from the dead to forever live and be glorified at the Fathers right hand. You can't do a thing to glorify Jesus, and Jesus Himself said as much. Our fruit glorifies the Father, but our fruit is not even our fruit, we just think it is.

So if it's all accomplished and finished, what must we do?

Believe in the finished work of Jesus, because no outward show of piety will do a thing for you, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision will avail you anything, but a new creation. Ironically everyone who has received the Holy Spirit has only ever received Him by faith and because of Jesus. Everything they did only led them to finally stop doing those things when they realize how pointless and worthless they are. It all leads to faith in Christ, but man still, for some reason, looks to self effort and flesh.

Having begun in the spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh?

What is faith;
1 Now (((faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.)))

What does faith do;
6 But (((without faith it is impossible to please him:))) for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

How do we get it;
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according (((as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.)))

What is its purpose;
11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

[Are you trading with heaven?]

16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, (((thy pound))) hath gained ten pounds.
17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

[Or doing business with the world?]

21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that ((((thou didst not sow.))))
22[a And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant.

24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

Why does this matter;
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

So whose slave are you;
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his

What is the spirit of Christ;
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: (((for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.)))
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: (((that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.)))*

Was Jesus’ prayer answered;
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because (((the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.)))
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

How can we know where we stand; (Christ or the world)*
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, (((the love of the Father is not in him.)))*

This is the basis of the New Covenant-
Have you received, Gods love for His Son?
This is the Covenant, it’s not a contract open to negotiation, it’s a covenant which the s unilateral by definition-
Wether you are male or female, Greek or Jew, Scythian or Barbarian… ((IF)) you have accepted the conditions and then received the reward, you can say you are in covenant/Christ.

Again this is evidenced by whom you obey, which is determined by whom you put your faith in. which is the expression of who you love, which reveals who is your treasure, which testifies of your heart.
- 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

The Holy Spirit is Gods love for His Son personified,… that is why He couldn’t be given to the world before the cross; hence J 3:16- though He, the Holy Spirt, was absolutely present and recorded throughout the old covenant-
Perhaps most notably, in relation to this thread, is the contrast between the love of the world and the love of God is in the story of Saul -David in their respective roles as King of Israel. When under extreme duress, suffering the reproach of the Lord, they both revealed their hearts with the words of their lips… Saul asked that "his kingdom” not be taken away- where David asked "take not thy spirit from me”

That’s why Jesus is the seed of David;
8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel

Except a grain of wheat die…..
Every fruit bear seed after it’s own kind…
Jesus is the firstborn ….
Apostles bore first fruits….
We build, are built upon the same foundation…

This is the New Covenant that was hidden, prophesied, revealed and fulfilled-

What are we waiting for;
19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God

In the meantime,… we are at war 💯

We seem to be talking about completely different topics. I was under the impression the original poster was seeking the baptism of the Holy Spirit/second blessing/union life/entire sanctification (whatever name you choose, it's all the same).

I apologize as it seems what your talking about is not that, I misunderstood.

J
JFW Aug 25, 2023

The OP is about "how to” receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit -
Tho receiving Him is itself a gift or blessing apart from the indwelling that occurs at conversion- where we must be cleansed or prepared before in order to receive Him.

When you made mention of the "finished work of the cross” as it’s commonly understood as a precursor or condition to receive Him, stating it was the basis of the NT, I cannot agree with that for one it’s not something I’ve found in scripture and secondly it is inconsistent with my experience both in conversion as well as being baptized w/Holy Spirt. I knew virtually nothing about the implications of what all was accomplished on the cross when He had mercy on me, it was only after both that He began to open His word and teach me about what had been accomplished on the cross. 🙏🏻
