II. It is no sign that affections have the nature of true religion, or that they have not, that they have great effects on the body.
All affections whatsoever, have in some respect or degree, an effect on the body. As was observed before, such is our nature, and such are the laws of union of soul and body, that the mind can have no lively or vigorous exercise, without some effect upon the body. So subject is the body to the mind, and so much do its fluids, especially the animal spirits, attend the motions and exercises of the mind, that there cannot be so much as an intense thought, without an effect upon them. Yea, it is questionable whether an imbodied soul ever so much as thinks one thought, or has any exercise at all, but that there is some corresponding motion or alteration of motion, in some degree, of the fluids, in some part of the body. But universal experience shows, that the exercise of the affections have in a special manner a tendency to some sensible effect upon the body. And if this be so, that all affections have some effect upon the body, we may then well suppose, the greater those affections be, and the more vigorous their exercise (other circumstances being equal) the greater will be the effect on the body. Hence it is not to be wondered at, that very great and strong exercises of the affections should have great effects on the body. And therefore, seeing there are very great affections, both common and spiritual; hence it is not to be wondered at, that great effects on the body should arise from both these kinds of affections. And consequently these effects are no signs, that the affections they arise from, are of one kind or the other.
Great effects on the body certainly are no sure evidences that affections are spiritual; for we see that such effects oftentimes arise from great affections about temporal things, and when religion is no way concerned in them. And if great affections about secular things, that are purely natural, may have these effects, I know not by what rule we should determine that high affections about religious things, which arise in like manner from nature, cannot have the like effect.

Nor, on the other hand, do I know of any rule any have to determine, that gracious and holy affections, when raised as high as any natural affections, and have equally strong and vigorous exercises, cannot have a great effect on the body. No such rule can be drawn from reason: I know of no reason, why a being affected with a view of God's glory should not cause the body to faint, as well as being affected with a view of Solomon's glory. And no such rule has as yet been produced from the Scripture; none has ever been found in all the late controversies which have been about things of this nature. There is a great power in spiritual affections: we read of the power which worketh in Christians,[2] and of the Spirit of God being in them as the Spirit of power,[3] and of the effectual working of his power in them.[4] But man's nature is weak: flesh and blood are represented in Scripture as exceeding weak; and particularly with respect to its unfitness for great spiritual and heavenly operations and exercises, Matt. 26:41, 1 Cor. 15:43, and 50. The text we are upon speaks of "joy unspeakable, and full of glory." And who that considers what man's nature is, and what the nature of the affections is, can reasonably doubt but that such unutterable and glorious joys, may be too great and mighty for weak dust and ashes, so as to be considerably overbearing to it? It is evident by the Scripture that true divine discoveries, or ideas of God's glory, when given in a great degree have a tendency, by affecting the mind, to overbear the body; because the Scripture teaches us often, that if these ideas or views should be given to such a degree as they are given in heaven, the weak frame of the body could not subsist under it, and that no man can, in that manner, see God and live. The knowledge which the saints have of God's beauty and glory in this world, and those holy affections that arise from it, are of the same nature and kind with what the saints are the subjects of in heaven, differing only in degree and circumstances: what God gives them here, is a foretaste of heavenly happiness, and an earnest of their future inheritance. And who shall limit God in his giving this earnest, or say he shall give so much of the inheritance, such a part of the future reward as an earnest of the whole, and no more? And seeing God has taught us in his word, that the whole reward is such, that it would at once destroy the body, is it not too bold a thing for us, so to set bounds to the sovereign God, as to say that in giving the earnest of this reward in this world, he shall never give so much of it, as in the least to diminish the strength of the body, when God has nowhere thus limited himself?

The Psalmist, speaking of the vehement religious affections he had, speaks of an effect in his flesh or body, besides what was in his soul, expressly distinguishing one from the other, once and again: Psal. 84:2, "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God." Here is a plain distinction between the heart and the flesh, as being each affected. So Psal. 63:1, "My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee, in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is." Here also is an evident designed distinction between the soul and the flesh.

The prophet Habakkuk speaks of his bodies being overborne by a sense of the majesty of God, Hab. 3:16: "When I heard, my belly trembled: my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness enter into my bones, and I trembled in myself." So the Psalmist speaks expressly of his flesh trembling, Psal. 119:120: My flesh trembleth for fear of thee."

That such ideas of God's glory as are sometimes given in this world, have a tendency to overhear the body, is evident, because the Scripture gives us an account, that this has sometimes actually been the effect of those external manifestations God has made of himself to some of the saints which were made to that end, viz., to give them an idea of God's majesty and glory. Such instances we have in the prophet Daniel, and the apostle John. Daniel, giving an account of an external representation of the glory of Christ, says, Dan. 10:8, "And there remained no strength in me; for my comeliness was turned into corruption, and I retained no strength." And the apostle John, giving an account of the manifestation made to him, says, Rev. 1:17, "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead." It is in vain to say here, these were only external manifestations or symbols of the glory of Christ, which these saints beheld: for though it be true, that they were outward representations of Christ's glory, which they beheld with their bodily eyes; yet the end and use of these external symbols are representations was to give to these prophets an idea of the thing represented, and that was the true divine glory and majesty of Christ, which is his spiritual glory; they were made use of only as significations of this spiritual glory, and thus undoubtedly they received them, and improved them, and were affected by them. According to the end for which God intended these outward signs, they received by them a great and lively apprehension of the real glory and majesty of God's nature, which they were signs of; and thus were greatly affected, their souls swallowed up, and their bodies overborne. And I think they are very bold and daring, who will say God cannot, or shall not give the like clear and affecting ideas and apprehensions of the same real glory and majesty of his nature, to any of his saints, without the intervention of any such external shadows of it.

Before I leave this head, I would farther observe, that it is plain the Scripture often makes use of bodily effects, to express the strength of holy and spiritual affections; such as trembling,[5] groaning,[6] being sick,[7] crying out,[8] panting,[9] and fainting.[10] Now if it be supposed, that these are only figurative expressions, to represent the degree of affection: yet I hope all will allow, that they are fit and suitable figures to represent the high degree of those spiritual affections, which the Spirit of God makes use of them to represent; which I do not see how they would be, if those spiritual affections, let them be in never to high a degree, have no tendency to any such things; but that on the contrary, they are the proper effects and sad tokens of false affections, and the delusion of the devil. I cannot think, God would commonly make use of things which are very alien from spiritual affections, and are shrewd marks of the hand of Satan, and smell strong of the bottomless pit, as beautiful figures, to represent the high degree of holy and heavenly affections. Like David Wilkerson said about weird manifestations, if it's not in the Bible, you MUST stand up against it.

In the Bible, I see people being, as we put it, slain in the Spirit. I have absolutely no problem with this. Of course a touch from the Eternal God would overwhelm someone. And when you experience the unspeakable joy there is in Jesus, it's hard to keep quiet! We are physical as well as spiritual beings, so what we experience spiritually oftentimes manifests physically.

Here's the thing, though; Satan's main goal is not the world he already controls: it's the church. Right from the beginning of time he has tried to corrupt the bride of Christ. And we are warned repeatedly in scripture that in the end times (now) there would be a false signs and wonders movement, that would be so convincing as to deceive even the elect. Scripture alludes to this false religious system being called the "great whore", and that some of His bride would be involved in spiritual fornication with her (which is why He says "come out of her"). Fornication can feel good. I find it interesting that the people involved in the false signs and wonders movement are OBSESSED with feeling God's presence. Don't get me wrong, I love Jesus and His manifest presence is beautiful and indescribable. But there are some times when we won't feel His presence and we must walk by faith. It is possible to make an idol out of our feelings.

It's sad that anyone who tries to use discernment and point out that much of what these teachers and pastors say and do CANNOT BE FOUND IN THE BIBLE is castigated as a religious pharisee, ostracized and ignored.

You can criticize any of the pastors or teachers I like, it's not a big deal to me. But I find if I criticize one of their favourite teachers, they get angry and upset, shut down all discussion, and stop talking to me whatsoever. All I say is, any teaching or manifestation should be examined by the scriptures, and if it does not agree with the written word, reject it and avoid it. I don't know why it would be controversial to say that.

I have seen a number of David Wilkerson's sermon videos online, and his Times Square Church pulpit series newsletters from the 1990s are also archived online. In one of these he wrote emphatically (transcribed from a sermon), "When I am slain in the Spirit I fall forward on my face in repentance---- not backwards."

I think it's pretty hard to go past men like Jonathan Edwards John Wesley even Charles Finney. Men who were caught up in the middle of the great awakenings and were leaders within that revival atmosphere.

Jonathan Edwards was an extreme Bible believer probably wrote more about the subject than anyone else in the history of the church because he probably experienced being a leader more than most people in their life.

The men like that we're not hyper charismatic but standard evangelical though John Wesley did believe in gifts of the spirit.

It's never a good idea to elevate one man like Leonard Ravenhill or David Wilkinson to a point of being the authority when it comes to revival it's good to get the opinions of as many as possible.

A person's eschatology is always going to effect a person's worldview, when we look at scripture and prophetic fulfilment Much of the prophecies about false prophets and false teachers were clearly being fulfilled in the first second third and fourth century by gnosticism and by Judeo-Christian legalism.

We have a good basis in history to actually understand what the false prophets the false teachers and the spirits that were operating in those movements.

And then we have the apostles and the letters the clearly tell us what the false teachers and false prophets were teaching, the doctrines were clearly heretical and a complete departure from the doctrines of Christ, especially gnosticism.

To try to label the new apostolic reformation men like Dutch sheets Bill Hammond and others as heretical is ridiculous, and what's even more ridiculous is to trying convince people that we know the people that are involved in that movement are living unholy lives.
We fall into wild assumptions and false judgements in stereotyping, not realising that if we are wrong in our judgements and do not continue to love even our so-called enemies let alone our brothers in Christ that we ourselves have fallen into grievous sin yet we point the finger.

In reality most of us wouldn't even know 2% of the local church where we go ,to even know whether they are living in sin , and this is what many people are guilty of I was guilty of it myself for quite a few years.

We can't judge someone by the fruit of their life if we don't know them personally in most cases. And many people claim to be using the gift of discerning of spirits or some special wisdom and discernment that they have but in reality they are using suspicion and false judgement based upon what they perceive is incorrect doctrine or manifestations that they don't agree with.

That is the opposite of spiritual discernment, spiritual discernment is a type of revelation in the spirit it is not done through the intellect, and yet we all swear by the scripture as the foundation of our faith and doctrine.

The gnostics rejected the gospel they had another completely different message with a completely different Jesus and a completely different spirit and a completely different father God and led people completely away from the faith.

On The other hand we had legalism that was bringing people under the law rather than the grace and liberty that was in Jesus Christ and these still moved according to the apostle Paul in miracles and gifts of the spirit.

Biblically speaking that is closer to the type of false teachings that our church is dealing with.

Paul's letter to the church at Galatia was dealing with that type of heresy and yet Paul still classes them as Christians and warned them not to continue to move into legalism and add the law of Moses to the grace of Christ.

The apostle Paul Also talked about it in his letter to Timothy he said there were men that had a form of godliness but denied the Power, that is the dunamis power of the holy spirit, can you think off Christians today that may be possibly denying the power of the spirit yet they have a form of godliness, well that is probably the other major issue within the church today.

Those would be 3 biblical examples of incorrect or false teachings or movements within the church and then you have probably gnosticism and witchcraft, over in Africa you have a lot more of that type of practise. In South America you see that type of tribal religion combined with Catholicism the same as in Africa with charismatics.

I'm not saying that there is not a false spirit like a spirit of divination that operates within the American church in the western Pentecostal charismatic church because there is, but to truly discern in the spirit, the spirits of python the divination spirits and the Jezebel spirits one should probably be trained in deliverance ministry at least with the verry basics and actually learn what these spirits are and actually practise studying them in victims ,and stop assuming that they know what the spirits look like.

In other words don't get your theology from movies.

If you've never had any experience with dealing with those particular spirits in people then it's not discernment it's just doctrine and theology in someone's head and that comes back to assumptions rather than any practical experience with dealing with the spirit of witchcraft and the spirit of python and Jezebel and Leviathan ect.

Most of the time these spirits are not operating on a corporate level but operating as personal oppressive spirits in the life of Christians who have become lukewarm or backslidden or who have had witchcraft ,Freemasonry or the occult in their bloodlines.

Derek Prince is probably one of the best starting points when it comes to learning about curses and the demonic reality in the Christians live in the world.

He was one of the finest deliverance ministers and Bible teaches combined that had practical experience dealing with curses and casting demons out of Christians.

The worst thing you could do to learn about influence of demons on Christians and in the church is to go to an evangelist who has never probably cast the demon out of the person or go to a pastor who is not known in deliverance ministry.🕎🙏✝️💜

My only authority is God's written word, nothing else. Not David Wilkerson, Leonard Ravenhill, or any other pastor.

The NAR has close ties with the prosperity gospel. That's all there is to it. Are there people in the NAR movement (and even some prosperity churches) that are saved? Of course. You will find true, born again believers among the Roman Catholics, the Seventh Day Adventists, the various Orthodox traditions, and many other groups that have made serious departures from clear biblical teachings. It doesn't mean God's stamp of approval is on all of these groups and every one of their doctrines. It just means God, in His mercy, saves people in spite of the error these groups preach.

But NAR leaders are on record saying outrageously blasphemous things, like "the Holy Spirit is blue and sneaky, like the genie from Aladdin." One of them said that he flew into Donald Trump's chest, and Donald has the word of God in his very DNA. Another said that she goes to heaven regularly and that there is a place where we can ride dinosaurs and eat candy all day long.

Please keep in mind I am NOT making any of this up. These are actual quotes, and it gets way weirder.

I believe that when a person is born again, any curses are completely broken by the blood of Jesus, no matter who was in your bloodline. No demon can inhabit a true believer. There is no scriptural support for believers having demonic spirits inhabiting them.

Nigal thats a perfect example of stereotyping millions of Christians because you watch some sermons or clips on let's say approximately twenty so-called leaders and have no idea about the lives of millions of believers in that loosely connected movement.

I wrote to Derek Prince a few years before he died, and he wrote back, defending Rodney Howard-Browne and "holy" laughter. That surprised me.

You would be correct if you said that a demon cannot posses a born again believer, but the deliverance ministry is primarily for Christians, and there are churches that believe like you that are full of people and pastors that have opened up the door to demon spirits through unforgiveness, the occult, and pornography, just to name a few doors that demons can enter Christians.

It seems such discussions don't get us anywhere.

I believe he is right that it requires trials to purify the Church. Such trials are already here for Christians in many parts of the world.
And they will come to the rest of us too.
They will come on this earth in a way we have never seen it before !

Seek the true Christ and fix your eyes on Him !

Derek Prince had his own experience of laughter that occurred in an army barricks.

"Reports have been coming in from Christian groups in widely separated locations of what appears to be a strange new phenomenon. Believers of different ages and widely different social backgrounds are being overcome by prolonged outbursts of laughter which have no obvious cause. Sometimes they may also act as if they are drunk. Often this laughter appears to be contagious. Those who have experienced it apparently "transmit" it to others. Large groups may be seized by it simultaneously.

Both ministers and lay people from a wide range of denominations have been affected in this way. Some testify that it has had a stimulating effect on their faith and has brought them closer to the Lord. On the other hand, there are those who are skeptical and view this kind of experience as a deception of the enemy. As a result of all this, I am frequently being asked whether I believe that the Holy Spirit at times produces in people prolonged, exuberant and apparently causeless laughter. "I have to believe it," I reply, "because that is how I was saved more than 50 years ago."

In the summer of 1941, I was part of a medical unit of the British Army billeted in a hotel on the North Bay of Scarborough in Yorkshire. The hotel had been gutted of all its furniture and fittings. Our "beds" were simply straw mattresses on the floor. While in Scarborough I had some brief contacts with Pentecostal Christians, who confronted me for the first time with my need to receive Christ as my personal Savior. At that point in my life I was a nominal Anglican, who never voluntarily attended church. I had never before heard of Pentecostals, and I had no idea what they believed or what kind of people they were.

About nine months previously, however, I had started to read the Bible through from beginning to end. I had no religious motive. I regarded the Bible merely as a work of philosophy. As a professional philosopher, I felt it was my academic duty to find out what the Bible had to say. At this point I had come as far as the book of Job-but it had been a dreary task! Confronted in this way with the claims of Christ, however, I decided about 11 o'clock one night to pray "until something happened." I had no idea what I might expect to happen. For about an hour I struggled in vain to form some kind of coherent prayer. Then about midnight I became aware of a presence and I found myself saying to some unknown person what Jacob had said when wrestling with the angel at Peniel: "Unless you bless me, I will not let you go" (Genesis 32:26).

I repeated these words several times with increasing emphasis: "I will not let you go, I will not let you go..." Then I began to say to the same unknown person, "Make me love you more and more". When I got to these last words, I again began to repeat them; "more and more and more..." At this point an invisible power came down over me and I found myself on my back on the floor, with my arms in the air, still saying, "more and more and more...."

After a while my words changed to deep sobbing which rose up from my belly through my lips, shaking my whole body convulsively. The sobs did not proceed out of anything in my conscious mind. I had no special sense of being sinful. After about half an hour, without any act of my volition, the sobbing changed to laughter. I had no more conscious reason for laughing than I had for sobbing. The laughter, like the sobbing, flowed from my belly. At first, it was quite gentle, but it gradually became louder and louder. I had the impression that I was being immersed in a sea of laughter that reverberated around the room."

This is only one of many reasons that I do not hold to Derek Prince's teachings.

When the Toronto Blessing came around it was as if the shamans had invaded the church, going about and laying hands on people until they twitched and convulsed. Afterwards, some of them had ongoing, uncontrollable spasms in daily life. This was not "anointing," but an attack on their bodies from outside. How sad. The Holy Spirit dwelt within, but they trusted in men (like John Wimber, now deceased) and opened themselves up to a counterfeit spirit that oppressed and debilitated rather than bringing healing.

The same thing happened in Pensacola, Florida. School children received "it" and became so disruptive in school with their violent, uncontrollable jerks that they had to be taken out of the classroom. That is not the God Whom we serve! They now needed deliverance, thanks to John Kilpatrick and Steve Hill (now deceased) who imparted "it" to them. That "revival" sifted that church like wheat and left it a tiny remnant of what it once was.

Our Lord is not weird, but wonderful. He is the Prince of peace, not the author of confusion. He is not strange, but a God of decency and order. Jesus said, "My burden is easy and My yoke is light." This is true, and in stark contrast to the false examples cited above.

So Brother, you do not hold to the teachings of one of the finest and most balanced biblical teachers that the Lord has blessed the Body of Christ with.

It’s easy for someone that hasn’t had the experience to judge someone that has, and all the time thinking that you have greater knowledge of the Word than Derek Prince, who had both knowledge and experience.

I love David Wilkerson but I've fallen in the Spirit and I've crumbled to the ground, I've fallen backwards. It's usually backwards b/c someone is standing in front of me praying. I didn't want to fall on them.

David Wilkerson is not God and that was his opinion and his experience which is not written in stone. You must remember that about those you hold up to the light.

Lysa, let's go case by case with the four verses you cited.

1.) What that means in the original Hebrew, and as shown perhaps more clearly to the modern reader in newer translations (though I prefer the KJV myself) is that the priests were already seated. They couldn't stand UP to minister because of God's glory. They weren't knocked down.

Jesus said to them, "I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Then when He said to them. "I am He,” ”“ they drew back and FELL TO THE GROUND.” (John 18:6)

2.) Those were the enemies of God who fell, not Christ's followers.

"And when I saw Him, I FELL AT HIS FEET as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.” (Revelation 1:17)

3.) Notice that John is strengthened and encouraged to write. He didn't stay down there in a coma. No twitching out. Likewise, when Daniel was in the presence of God his strength left him and he was like one in a deep sleep, but the Lord had an angel quicken him and stand him up upon his feet.

4.) Saul (not yet Paul) was still an enemy of the Gospel at that point.

In the Bible the ones who get knocked down and stay down are God's adversaries. Notice that the Roman guards at the garden tomb trembled violently and fainted like dead men in the presence of an angel of God.

Gary, I know people in these movements. It isn't hearsay, or me being judgmental because I've heard a few sermons. Eternal souls are at stake. I take that seriously. I am not willing to accept clear error for the sake of unity; the unity would be man made anyway.

Please hear me clearly: People like Kenneth Copeland and his ilk preach another Jesus. They preach another gospel. if people in the NAR recognize him as a brother, an alarm should sound in your soul.

In eternity people will see I had their best interest at heart, and I was willing to suffer to be able to warn them. I love you and everyone else who names the Name of Christ.

If you can show me in the scriptures where God makes people bark like animals, have seizures, laugh uncontrollably, behave drunkenly etc. then please do. If Gods word approves it, so do I. But if not, I have no choice but to reject it.

Brother if you haven't yet found the verses in the bible that talk about trembling and acting drunk ect then it would help to read the bible or do an internet search.
