(11) Many false prophets shall rise.””The later writings of the New Testament bear repeated testimony to this feature of the ten years that preceded the destruction of Jerusalem. St. John speaks of false prophets (1John 4:1), and many antichrists (1John 2:18); St. Peter of "false teachers” (2Peter 2:1), like the false prophets of old; St. Paul of men who should give heed to seducing spirits (1Timothy 4:1). These show the extent of the evil which was the natural outcome of the feverish excitement of the people. In Josephus (Wars, vi. 5, § 2) we have the record of this working of false prophecy in more immediate connection with Judæa and Jerusalem. Up to the last moment of the capture of the city by Titus, men were buoyed up with false hopes of deliverance, based on the predictions of fanatics and impostors.

I like this post - after meditating for a while on this post, there could be so much to say on these last days, false prophets, many anti-christ's that will abound - buoyed up with false hopes of deliverance.

I would say one of the main false hopes which is "false prophecy" is that we are not going to face the tribulation.

Are you suggesting in this post in combination with others that the references to and warnings to be on gaurd for false teachers, false apostles and false prophets is teaching meant only for pre 70 AD Christiaans. It seems to be the
implication of the post but would rather hear directly if that is the point you want to make. If it isn't, my apologies in advance.

Robert are you saying that that's what Ellicot and John Gill believe.

As far as I'm aware they believe that prophecy from Jesus was fulfilled within the first century. Rather then just pre 70 Ad

I really don’t want to engage in any intellectual gamesmanship. I don’t know all their writings so I can only go on your posting of it to deduce your thinking on the matter. Nonetheless, I know John Gill would be aware of this Scripture:

1 John 4:1 - Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Likewise, Jude wrote his epistle about false teachers anywhere from 67AD to 80AD.

Of course Scripture written after 70 AD would have a greater relevance than either the "opinions” of Brothers Gill or Elliot. I presume.
