Paul was the great church planter, disciple maker and evangelizer of the Gentiles primarily but also of the Jewish people. He wished he was accursed for the sake of his brothers in the flesh and he suffered much for the sake of the lost and the elect. Paul preached with urgency and taught the people of God in such a way that it would be hard to deny that he felt it was possible that Jesus might return during his lifetime. This is not meant to be news to anyone but rather to show in stark contrast how Paul could be a man of two hearts at the same time in a good way. Here's a very compelling example of Paul's state of heart and mind towards Jesus and the lost that runs in parallel with the forgoing heart of Paul.
If anyone does not love the Lord, a curse be on him. Our Lord, come! 1 Corinthians 16:22 (CSB)
Paul had no delusion about what Jesus' coming would mean to many still in darkness. He had deep anguish for them and yet, at the same time, he was realistic and recognized spiritual realities in a mature way and was able to hold two seemingly opposing desires and ethics in place at the same time........ and not in tension as is popular to say. He felt, desired, prayed and lived for both.
Paul is no more super human than we are. Perhaps he's just more realistic and carries a more healthy spiritual point of view and perspective on matters and events of first importance. Both points of view honor Christ to the full when in tandem.
