Challenged Positions

I

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
(Philippians 2:3-4)

Pride often kicks in when my position is challenged, I become myopic. But here is my cue to lowliness of mind.

Seeking a wise compromise is not natural to the human condition; asserting myself and my view comes much more easily.

I read this morning in Leviticus that the priests were given very careful instructions for examining a person for leprosy, only they could determine if it was "deeper than the skin” and therefore the person was unclean.

Of course this was a picture of the inward depths of sin which only Christ can reveal and cure. But the point is that we are not able to see beyond the outward appearance and we are further restricted in this forum by not knowing or even having met (in most cases) the person we are in dialog with.

How careful then we should be when our position is challenged or when we challenge the position of another.

In Christ,

The scriptures speak to us all
when there is a disagreement of any kind.

"But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,”

(2 Timothy 2:23-25)

"This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. "(James 3:15-18
