Thoughts on the Holy Spirit

Christ said, "If you love me, keep My commandments. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper that He may be with you forever; the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.” (John 14:15-18)

I truly sense that we are, for the most part, a generation devoid of God’s Holy Spirit. Perhaps we have just not, by faith, gotten acquainted with He who lives within us who is greater than he (Satan) who lives within the world! (1 John 4:4) As new creations in Christ Jesus, (2 Cor 5:17) we receive a new heart and a new spirit, and the Holy Spirit indwells us. (Eze 36:25-28) If we were to have a new roommate move into our physical house, I imagine we would quickly get to know this person we are now sharing a space with! Especially when this particular roommate changed everything within our house upon entering! So how much more should we prioritize developing a relationship with the Holy Spirit of God who resides within our own body? If we truly are born again? (John 3)

"But you know him, [The Holy Spirit] for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:17)

"I will put My Spirit [The Holy Spirit] within you and bring it about that you walk in My statutes and are careful and follow My ordinances.” (Eze 36:27)

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Cor 6:19)

"You, however, are not in the flesh but in the [Holy] Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him..." (Rom 8:9)

Do you know Him? Have you gotten acquainted with Him who lives within you, if in fact you are, through Christ, born again? The Holy Spirit is not mute, nor is He lifeless within us! He was not sent to just take up space either, that would certainly be futile. Without His direction, guidance, training us in righteousness, and His fruits, our works will be burned to smoke at the Bema Seat of Christ! Without Him living within us we are merely pharisees headed to the Lake of fire. Spiritual sight only comes from the Spirit of God. It is He who brings forth the difference within our lives. The Holy Spirit is the third member of the God Head, and He lives within God’s people! If He does not live within you then you are not born again. (John 3, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 2, Acts 11:15)

"You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" (Gal 3:1-3)

Thankfully through Father’s loving discipline, my eyes were opened, discerning vividly that His Holy Spirit is in fact within me! I continually feel His presence now, and yes, He does talk to me. (Acts 15:28, Acts 16:6, Psalm 143:10, Acts 13:2, Mark 13:11) He was put within us as a promise, as a seal of our relationship between us, God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord! Sadly, I fear many do not have a genuine relationship with Him. (Eph 1:13) Our relationship with Him or lack thereof corresponds directly with our relationship with God the Father and God the Son, Christ Jesus.

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." (John 16:13)

The Holy Spirit lives with me, and I’m commanded to walk in step with Him! This means we have to get to know Him! (Galatians 3) It is through the Holy Spirit that we overcome the flesh and our spiritual enemies in Jesus's name. Yet, many people just don’t talk much about God’s Spirit, nor His ways, so God the Father has to train us Himself! Early in my walk, I often looked to others to learn spiritual truths with some success. I was too immature and deaf too spiritual truths to heed the Holy Spirit. To listen as I was reading God's Word. However, as I’ve grown in my relationship with the Holy Spirit, I have found Him to be my best Teacher, and instructor, and even encourager on the narrow path we are to follow day by day, as He instructs us step by step. (Act 16:6-7)

"I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." (Gal 5:16)

If we have the Holy Spirit living within us, we also have Christ and God the Father within us! For God who is one, is working within three distinct functions. You who be in Christ, begin to know His Spirit who lives within you! Stay in God's Word and learn to walk with His Holy Spirit. You certainly already know He is not going to tell you to sin! Instead, He is going to direct you away from sin! Even making you sick to your stomach concerning sin. He desires whole heartedly to mature us into the very likeness of Christ Jesus our Savoir.

"...do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." (Eph 4:30)

The Holy Spirit was sent to indwell us so we would not be orphans, so we would be trained in righteousness, so we could reveal Christ to the world, so we through Him, could navigate our Christian walk in a manner pleasing to God, and so He could lead us into all spiritual truth! Through the Holy Spirit, we are connected to God the Son, and God the Father. Being one God in three, we find our connection to the God Head through His Holy Spirit, and through Him we are connected to Christ Jesus inwardly, our hope of glory. (Col 1:27)

Amen Billy! Holy Spirit is a Person, who leads us into all the truth and reveals Jesus to us. It is very important to pray the Apostolic prayers, such as Ephesians 1: 17-19:

Awaken Us (Individually)
Key Scripture-Ephesians 1:17-19 "...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your [a]understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power...”

Thank you, brother Mike, I have never heard of praying the Apostolic prayers before! I will begin Father willing to start! I appreciate the many members of Sermon Index I have read most of your posts for years, gleaning many things. I know the Word says to share with those who have taught you. So, when I'm led, I share based off of that now. Thank you all, I'm grateful for brethren in Christ.

This is overall a useful write up. I only wish to add that there are occasions where you find folks who may think themselves Christians but without being indwelled. I wish to emphasise that coming to be indwelled is not something that always co-occur with your decision for Christ. At Ephesian Paul said to 12 disciples: Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed (no they had not)?

At Samarian, after the wonders working Philip had preached Christ, those that believed did not receive the Holy Spirit until Peter and John were sent from Jerusalem to go and lay hands and pray for them. And then the Spirit came on them. At Cornelius, Peter was just still speaking (telling of Christ) when the Spirit fell on them with no laying on of hands.

This makes it necessary for everyone to have to know for a fact, for themselves, that they have or have not received the Holy Spirit (or indwelling). And not taking it for granted that we have.

But one should be able to know the circumstances of the encounter. So that if any one should ask you like Paul did to the Ephesians, you should be able to answer with a clear yes or no. Especially as we understand that being without it is thus to be understood as being unknown to him.

Unsure if you have it? Then you had better start seeking to earn it with diligence. Engaging brethrens (amongst others) should you need more information that should further help you earn this Seal.
