The best way to learn about this stuff, is just go do it :) I've learned in my open-air preaching experiences that in general, you can expect each time you go out it will be a unique experience, because often you will be speaking to different people than you did last time. Treat mockers and hecklers with gentleness, and in a peaceful, respectful way. Don't get disturbed over them, but remain calm and continue to speak full of the joy of the Holy Spirit. Bless and do not curse. Don't be harsh towards them, instead, simply realize that in their mocking the Scripture is being fulfilled which predicts that they will. Instead, be filled with sorrow for them. Contrary to what Ray Comfort and many other street preachers teach, don't take advantage of hecklers for the sake of simply drawing a crowd. Rather, be a servant towards them, instead of just using them as some sort of prop to gather crowds. They are a soul that needs Jesus, and you should not take advantage of them simply to draw more numbers. You are there for them, they are not there for you. Granted, having a "good heckler" might draw a bigger crowd, but your aim is not to create tension and conflict and strife, or a big traffic accident that people are just stopping and waiting to see. If they are simply there to view the traffic accident between 2 people having a public conflict, they will not really at all be paying attention to anything you are saying. If you want to draw a big crowd, simply be on fire for Jesus and have a loud voice. But, I'd suggest staying away from the numbers game altogether. Be careful that you do not get a big head either, simply because you are likely to, on a college campus, preach to thousands of people in a given day (more than your typical church ever does in one year- yet with hundreds more sermons). And above all, remember if you are going out to preach in the streets, you are there to tell people about Jesus's death and resurrection. Be careful of falling into the common street preachers trap of simply trying to convince everybody they are hell deserving sinners that need God's grace. As much as that might be true, the focus of the gospel message is to be the resurrection of Christ, and bringing people to encouter Him. Preach repentance, hell, fire, brimestone messages with much grace and brokenness, but keep the center of your message the about the livine One. Most street preachers, I must sadly say, have strayed greatly from these things.
