GULFPORT, Miss. - As dawn broke over the ravaged Gulf Coast on Tuesday, the extent of the death and destruction from Hurricane Katrina was becoming clearer: Tens of thousands of homes flooded or wiped out, hundreds of victims still awaiting rescue, and a death toll in the dozens if not greater.Mississippi’s governor said the death toll in just one county could hit as high as 80.“The devastation down there is just enormous,” Gov. Haley Barbour told NBC’s “Today” show.
