Spurgeon was not only a great preacher and writer, he was also principal of The Pastors College which began with a single student in his kitchen and continues to the present day. Spurgeon had 'preachers' in mind for his college and this book is a compilation of some of his lectures to them. They are wonderfully scriptural and full of common sense and fun. Fun? yes fun. Spurgeon (like Ravenhill) had a mischievous sense of fun and the company of these young men seem to have been the perfect setting for it. It has been said of Spurgeon 'that he never went out of his way to make a joke, and never went out of his way to avoid one'.There are excellent chapters on prayer, preaching, open-air preaching, and one straight from his own heart and experience called 'the minister's fainting fits'. Anyone involved in full-time Christian work should make this chapter a must for their reading list. There is a sequel called 'An all round ministry' which were the keynote sermons preached at the annual reunions of the Pastor's College; wonderful stuff. Don't let the Victorian English put you off; there is gold here.
