About the violence in New Orleans...

sermonindex Sep 1, 2005

I know my voice wont make much difference... but for the sake of our friends from other countries that visit this site... you're seeing all the looting and criminal activity in New Orleans. These people are an embarrassment to our country, and they represent the worst that humanity has to offer. The vast majority of Americans are appalled by what we're seeing. If someone is stealing from a grocery store in order to feed their children, I'm ok with that. At this point that is a matter of survival. If I owned a grocery store down there, I would be fine with it. But stealing TV's and DVD players... wrong. Marshal Law has been declared down there, and as far as I am concerned, the orders to law enforcement should be shoot to kill... ask questions later.People are shooting at helicopters and law enforcement... my goodness. Law enforcement should shoot to kill, and put an end to this evil.I just wanted to voice that because it's rediculous. It's a shame. And I've seen some of the headlines from other countries... What they're not reporting is the massive aid efforts that are happening across the country. And to those from countries that are sending relief... thank you!Krispy

firstly Krispy I'm from the U.K. and i can confirm what your saying were geting the looting story over and over again here, even people stealing the shelving that stock is on!!! I've only heard one person interviewed condemn it in the reports, so firstly for my american friends we on the other side of the 'pond' are getting alot about the looting and almost nothing about the aid going in.If anyone else from over here has any different stories please feel free to correct me, i only watch the news maybe once a day.second point:If someone is stealing from a grocery store in order to feed their childrenI've often wondered about this kind of behaviour in a Biblical worldview, i recently read an excerpt from 'The Evil of Evils' by Jeremiah Burroughs where he exhorts that to sin is worse than anything else hence people being martyred and presumably even worse the death of a family member i was wondering if someone could offer their opinion on this.matt

I would have no problem taking food. I read stories in the news where the police were helping people take FOOD. TV's and things that ... shoot to kill.Let me add tho... once things normalized... and I was back on my feet, I would find the store owner and pay him for what I took.Krispy

Proverbs 6:30-31Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger; But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He must give all the wealth of his house.Mike

My family and I were watching some of the news coverage last night and a member of my family reacted with a negative response to some of the bad and sinful things happening.I have learned to be slow to respond and made the comment to my family that we must remember that we do not know how we would be acting if we were in the same situation and did not know the Lord.I am less quick to judge these people even though I know they are doing wrong. I think we can pray for them that God will draw many to Himself through this catastrophic event and those that come to Him will turn from their sin and repent of these things. The others will continue to do wickedness like it says in Revelation.God bless,Mike

Because law enforcement has to focus on looters, people are dying because that have to go ignored. It needs to be dealt with harshly.Krispy

Krispy:I think you misunderstood what I am saying or I did not communicate it well enough.I agree with you that the government should deal with the situation in what ever way they determine, harsh if necessary. I am saying as Christians we must in our hearts not become harsh and judgmental to the point we are bitter towards the people doing these things. I remember the days when I would be the same way.I hope that clears things up a bit.Blessings,Mike

But to put an end to the madness... harshness by law enforcement.Krispy

TV's and things that ... shoot to kill.Hi KrispyI know that law and order must be maintained, but to act as judge, jury and executioner for a TV? :-? How do you justify the death sentence for a stolen TV? (not a hostile question, just really struggling to see how you would justify this stance, biblically.)

I know that law and order must be maintained, but to act as judge, jury and executioner for a TV? How do you justify the death sentence for a stolen TV? (not a hostile question, just really struggling to see how you would justify this stance, biblically.)I don't think that it is as important as what's being stolen. Certainly you have to feel compassion for those stealing food to survive--this is a different matter all together. But the other things, the material things, come about as a result of lawlessness. New Orleans is a lawless city right now. It has been a common practice in America when catastrophies of this nature take place, that those protecting their property have done it at the point of a gun. When hurricane Andrew hit Florida there were signs placed all over the affected communities that said, "Looters will be shot." This was condoned by the authorities in that it greatly helped to keep the looting down. The difference in New Orleans is that the owners of the businesses affected are mostly out of the city and can't get back in. It's important to remember that New Orleans is not under the rule of law at this moment. But even after all this, a christian's response should be different. While those enforcing peace do not wield the sword in vain. We should take the spoiling of our goods without violence knowing that we have a better home and treasure in the world to come.

I know that law and order must be maintained, but to act as judge, jury and executioner for a TV? How do you justify the death sentence for a stolen TV? (not a hostile question, just really struggling to see how you would justify this stance, biblically.)Let me clarify... it's not a TV. It's the fact that if it isnt stopped it will only get worse. Gun stores were broken into and guns stolen. That place is time bomb right now. And it needs to stop. It started with a Walmart... but now it's getting completely out of hand. It needs to be stopped by force in order to protect those who are not involved and just trying to get out.I could care less about a TV... what are they gonna do? Watch it? It's the lawlessness that needs to be dealt with by force.Didnt mean to indicate someone should be shot for a TV. And what do police do if they just cuff them? The jails are under water... and the looters know it. If law enforcement begins to enact zero tolerance, then the looting will subside.I've personally been in situations like this when I was in the Marines, and deadly force is the only thing that will put a stop to this. Looting will become murdering... it already has. I read about a man in Miss. that shot his sister in the head over a bag of ice.Krispy

I saw on TV UK. A black women begging at the camera, for G Bush to get the Home Gaurd in to New Orleans and that babies children and women being raped. Her husband by her side looked in shock, she was crying and we have no water,no food, please help us and we are so frightened. Her children in a supermarket trolly and walking on the fearful streets. And where is the world, what are they doing. where are the planes and aid to drop off the planes. Where is the world. Forget your TV's. But roll on Law and order. Here comes the disease people are dying where they sit, and left there by others, disease. babies no food, no nappies. No medicines that people need. Some will die. eg because of No insulin etc.....Prayer Prayer.ellie

And where is the world, what are they doing. where are the planes and aid to drop off the planes. Where is the world.Thank you ellie. I Read this today..."The United Nations is pledging to help the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Annan says that although the U-S is the country best able to cope with such a disaster, the U-N and the rest of the international community are prepared to help. He also notes that America and its relief agencies have always responded to disasters in other parts of the world."As Krispy has said ...to those from countries that are sending relief... thank you!MC
