I thought it was interesting how we hear about moving people from the New Orleans Superdome to the Houston Astrodome. It isn't the Astrodome anymore, it's Lakewood Church. But the media isn't calling it by it's name. Just thought that was interesting to note.
It hasnt been called the Astrodome in along time has it? I thought it was called the Compaq Center when Lakewood Church bought it.EDIT: But yeah its interesting why they didn't just mention the church.
Well... if the media called it Lakewood Church I dont think most Americans would recognize it. They would think "How can they fit 27,000 people into a church??"But when they call it the Astrodome, most folks know what that is.I wouldnt get too hung up on it... but altho I'm not a fan of Osteen, I am glad to see that it is a CHURCH that has stepped up and gotten involved. Bravo Joel Osteen and Lakewood Church! BillPro goes to that church... hopefully we hear from him soon. it would be nice to get a first hand account of whats going on down there in Houston.Krispy
I did not realize that the two were the same. Thanks for the info Jesse. But, that's not at all what I wanted to hear. That's just what these homeless, stranded, hurting people don't need - a false gospel, a false "jesus", a false sense of security and 7 steps to happier and more prosperous life.God help us all! Hi Lazarus1719...!The Lakewood Church didn't buy the Astrodome (where both the Houston Astros and Houston Oilers baseball and football teams used to play). They purchased a 30-year lease of the Compaq Center, where the Houston Rockets basketball team used to play. I take back my earlier post. I do commend Lakewood if they are involved in the relief effort, however.I also agree... a false gospel is not what they need. But I also realize that many Bible believing churches are involved in the relief effort.Krispy
OK, I'm a bit confused here. It seems that from ccchhhrrriiisss's post that the Astrodome seats 46,000+ while the Compaq Center seats 18,000. Was "the Summit" renamed the Compaq Center? Pictures of Lakewood Church are no where near what the inside of the Astrodome looked like.
Hi RobertW...!Lakewood Church purchased a 30-year lease of the Compaq Center from the City of Houston. The Compaq Center was formerly known as The Summit, and was an arena where the Houston Rockets NBA team used to play. It seats about 18,000.The Astrodome was a large domed-stadium where The Houston Astros baseball team and Houston Oilers football team used to play. Currently, only a few events for the Houston Livestock and Rodeo are held there, along with a few high-school sporting events. It seats quite a few more people than the Compaq Center (about 55,000 of a baseball game, and 62,000 for a football game). Many people in Houston are hoping that the Astrodome will be demolished by 2009 or 2010, since it is hardly used and is located in a very expensive property district.The two structures are not the same. :-)
