There is a big difference between submitting yourself, ie yielding your rights for the well-being of another (love), and submitting yourself to someone who wishes to have control and domination over you. There must be proper boundaries in all relationships, and when these boundaries are violated, much harm is done. Inappropriate submission is not LOVE. It is selling yourself to another and giving him/her power over you that is unlawful - spritually speaking. You should respect your pastor's authority when it comes to the practical function of the church, but he cannot control your freedom to hear from God. He cannot be your hightest conscience, or usurp your will. You haven't shared what it is exactly that this pastor is asking of you. Why not ask him to be specific about his expectations? That should help you understand where he is at. It may be necessary to define your boundaries with him - ie share what you are free do for him, and what you cannot (with a right conscience). He should appreciate your concerns and your questions. If he is threatened by your asking, then you will know that he is out of line. It is better to know where you stand - preferably as soon as possible. Above all, seek the Chief Shepherd for guidance. This challenge is a wonderful opportunity to grow in your own faith, and it may be a wonderful way to build a relationship of trust with your pastor. God will help you. Diane
