A question on christian relationships

V
Valadar Nov 7, 2005

My brothers ands especially sisters in Christ I have a question, do you think that it is wise to tell a fellow sister in Christ that you have feelings for her, if she is involved with somebody? The truth is that I have had feelings for this sister for a long time and the feelings are not dying, no matter how many times I have asked the Lord to take them away. I have considered writing her a letter, but I am not sure if its better to let it carry on and keep struggling on, by the Lords grace, it just seems to cause so much pain sometimes and I don't want to tell her, because I want her to be happy.Any thoughts Blessings Craig :-)

If she is involved in another relationship, it is not wise to confess some sort of romantic feelings for her. Such would simply be an act of selfishness, and not love. "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you." If you were her boyfriend, you would not like it if some other guy came up to her and started speaking about such. So, don't do it yourself. It would show neither love nor respect for either of the individuals, who are your brothers and sisters in Christ. You might want to check out Chip Ingram's "Love, Sex, and Lasting Relationships." Good book.

Thank you King Jimmy for your honesty, I have already decided that I wasn't going to tell her, but you point of view helps. Blessings in ChristCraig

Let me also add that you need to give this to God and let go of it in faith. If God's will is for you to be with this lady, then you have to believe that He will make it happen. If it never happens, then rejoice! It wasnt God's will, and you would have been miserable if YOU made it happen. See what I mean?King Jimmy made some good points about selfishness and what not. I agree with what he said. I think you checked your motives for telling her, you would probably agree.I will stop short of advising you 100% against telling her. For instance, if you see her boyfriend treating her with disrespect or discern that the relationship may be drawing her away from the Lord... you may want to pray and seek wisdom from God about whether or not you should be more assertive.I think it was Dennis Rainey (who heads up a family and marriage ministry) who tells the story of how he met his wife and told her she was going to marry him within a week of them meeting. She had a boyfriend. She married Dennis 2 months later. So pray about it, seek wisdom. Be respectful of this other brother.Krispy

If God's will is for you to be with this lady, then you have to believe that He will make it happen.Do you believe this? Well, it happened to me. When I first knew my husband he was with another girl - in highschool. He never knew I existed. One day, as I was chatting with a friend, I suddenly blurted out, "See that guy over there. I am going to marry him." I believe that it was God who gave that little prophetic sneak pre-view. Anyway, I watched that "guy" have a variety of girl-friends for the next few years. I had no problem with that because I knew that my day would eventually come. And then the day came when we connected.... and five years later we were married. Feelings are hard to change - expecially once they become strong. But I do not believe that our feelings should determine our actions. They don't even necessarily indicate God's will for us. It's wonderful that you are leaving this lady with God - in spite of your feelings. I fully trust that God will bless you as a result. Diane

You might want to check out Chip Ingram's "Love, Sex, and Lasting Relationships." Good book. Will second that. Have not read the book but have heard Chip's messages on this over the years, and know that a great deal in this book is from those. Chip it was that brought A.W.Tozer to my 'Knowledge' :-) and ultimately to all this vast treasure here.

An awesome message to listen to is by Tim Dilena (you can find it on this site under: other speakers) called 'Reading between the Lines'. It really puts things into perspective in terms of making God our number one priority and keeping a pure heart. It has a lot of references to pursuing Godly relationships and really setting our hope in Christ. If you get a chance to listen to it, I think it will really bless you.Roxi
