I suspect it is european composite. The 'commonly accepted' face is different in different eras and in different cultures. Try entering 'the face of Christ' into a Google search image. It gives over 4000 examples. :-D
This is a key phrase in "conditioning" the mind to accept untruth. The "commonly accepted". Who said? There is no picture of Christ. Therefore no painting or picture could be commonly accepted. Your phrasing causes weak people to want to flow along with the crowd. "Well, if it's commonly accepted, it must be Him". NOT! I know I'm being a bit harsh here, which is not my nature. But I can't see Jesus approving such a thing. Most artists depict a very handsome, often non-jewish looking young man. Actors are chosen the same way. Isaiah said there was nothing about Him that we should desire Him. In a crowd, He would not stand out to anyone, but be completely overlooked. Anything made with the hand of man cannot possible image God. God is limitless. That is why He warned us against making images. Please don't get sucked in to believing that any picture is commonly accepted. If it has not been approved by the throne of Grace, it is not accepted. Peace be with you,Onesimus
I believe the painting you are referring to came out of the Renaissance Period. Of course, the artist could only base his rendering of Christ on past art. If you look at the paintings of Christ from the 5th century thru the Medieval Period, the paintings of Christ look a lot different. The painting you are speaking of shows Christ having more of a European look... like he was half German, half Italian.Personally, I think we'll all be surprised when we see Him. The Word said there was nothing about His appearance that would attract people to Him. I think he was average height, probably dark curly hair, and looking very Jewish. Probably had short hair as well, considering He was Nazerene.Krispy

The painting of Christ face or the image .is to remind us that the word of GOD became flesh man.not that the paintaing or image is to be worshiped.in medevil times reading and writing was a right of passage for the rich only.Pictures or painting spoke out loud the to poor,who could not read or write.
Just want to back up what's been said about Jesus being of very average appearance. This is borne out in at least three places. The most striking is when Judas had to give Him a kiss to single Him out, (Mark 14) and even Jesus mentions there and then - they could have picked Him up at the temple, where He had taught openly.Then there was Nazareth, where he healed someone on a sabbath, and they took him outside to throw Him off a local cliff butLuke 4:30 ... he passing through the midst of them went his way, 31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. and John 6:15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. He seemed to be able to disappear in a crowd.
