One morning with a friend I walked out of the city of Geneva to wherethe waters of the lake flow with swift rush in to the Rhone, and wewere both greatly interested in the strange sight which has impressedso many travellers. There are two rivers whose waters come togetherhere, the Rhone and the Arve. The Arve flowing in to the Rhone.Thewaters of the Rhone are beautifully clear and sparkling. The waters ofthe Arve come through a clayey soil and are muddy, gray, and dull. I went to the guidebook and maps to find outsomething about this river that kept on it's way undefiled by it'sneighbor for so long. Its source is in a glacier that is between 10,000and 11,000 feet high, descending "from the gates of eternal light, atthe foot of the pillar of the sun."It is fed continually by themelting glacier which,in turn,is being kept up by the snows andcold.Rising at this great height, ever being renewed steadily by theglacier, the river comes down rushing down the swift descent of theSwiss Alps through the lake of Geneva, and on.There is the secret ofpurity, side by side with it's dirty neighbour. Our lives must have their source high up in themountains of God ,fed by a ceaseless supply.Only so can there be thepurity, and the momentum that will keep us pure, and keep us moving downin contact with men of the earth.Constant personal contact with Jesusis the ever new begininning of service. --S.D.Gorden.
