Are you struggling with prayer?

sermonindex Mar 5, 2006

Philippians 4:6,7 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication make your request known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Prayer is something that most of us struggle with at one time or another. There is a direct correlation between your walk with the Lord and your prayer life. There can be seasons of dryness, seasons of drought, seasons of abundance, there can be deep dark winters from which we may think we shall not emerge from, all of this is common to every saint. There are many teachings about prayer, there are a thousand books one could buy that attempt to teach us how to pray properly, or with power, or with might and faith, and yet the truth is as simple as our relationship with Jesus. Prayer is our relationship with God. They are one and the same. If we attempt to separate them then we will get lost. There are no formulas, no secret methods, prayer is being in the presence of God. When I was a teenager, I had to go to a school that required me to go by train. On the journey home, a guy in my class would get of at the same stop, and, as we lived in the same neighborhood, we would have about a two mile walk to get home. I used to dread that walk home. I did not really know this guy and so we both talked incessantly about anything and everything just so we could avoid any embarrassing silences. As we got to know each other better, there was not such a need to constantly have to think of something to say, and as time went on, we could be peaceful in the silence. For most of us, we have a concept of prayer that is all about talking. We start of by giving thanks, then we make our requests, we pray for family members and before we know it has become ritualistic and barren. Prayer should be much more like breathing, when was the last time you thought about breathing? Your probably not even conscious of your breathing, yet you do it continually and it sustains you and gives you life, bringing precious oxygen through your lungs, sustaining the very nerve center of your body, your brain. While prayer times and quiet times are good, for many, that is our moments when we connect with God. In the morning and in the evening before we go to bed. If we have neglected His presence all day, our prayer times will not be effective. In our minds, we must take God every where we go, whispering to Him all through the day as we face the challenges, trials and temptations that come with life. Begin to see God everywhere, visualize His presence everywhere you go and you will be amazed at the depth of your relationship that will come. You will not just be talking to Him in your prayer times and quiet times, He will become an integral part of everything that you do. Each whisper, every Godward thought, every word spoken, each moment of silence spent in His presence is like a musical note to the Lord. The Scriptures refer to the Lord as "He who sits above the circle of the earth." And so He who sits above the circle of the earth, sees each and every one of these musical notes from around the world from the Body of Christ, rising up in a majestic symphony of love and worship and it is a sweet, sweet sound in His ears. This day, become part of that symphony, let your days be filled with thoughts of Him, release whispers of love to add to the music of prayer. Simply whisper the name of Jesus, all throughout the day, remind Him of how much you love Him, thank Him for the day, no matter what kind of day that your having. Rediscover that bond of love and joy and peace that comes simply by being in His presence. When you do this brothers and sisters, your prayer life will change dramatically, but not only your prayer life, your life itself. For when we walk in continual prayer we begin to see the beauty of the Lord everywhere. If it rains, we see His beauty in the raindrops, if the sun shines we see His beauty as the flowers turn themselves around to face the glory of the Son. If it is cloudy we see his beauty break through the clouds in beams of light that remind us that despite the momentary darkness, He is not finished with us and that His light is ready to break through. Pray without ceasing brothers and sisters, it is not a bondage, but a glorious privilege that enables us and empowers us to be overcomers in a dark world that is desperate for the light of love, joy, peace, truth, justice and compassion. If we continue in Him, if we abide, then we will be all of these things and more and our lives will be dynamic testimonies to the glory of the risen Lord. As I finished writing this, I sense that many who read this are facing "cloudy days," and the light of the Love of Jesus seems to have flown away. I pray that this day the Lord will give you eyes to see beyond the clouds and you will reestablish your connection with Him. I wrote this poem as I flew into Scotland, a country almost continually covered by clouds and darkness. EVER PRESENTBEYOND EVERY CLOUDI KNOW ITS TRUETHE SUN SHINES BRIGHTAND THE SKY IS BLUEIF WE ONLY HAD EYE'S THAT COULD TRULY SEETHAT DESPITE HUMAN CHAINSWE ARE SURELY FREESO DO NOT STAND STILL FROZEN TO THE GROUNDLET YOUR SPIRIT FLYIN THE AIR TO BE FOUNDAND WHEN THE DARK CLOUDS THREATEN TO CONSUMEALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THERE'S AN EMPTY TOMBAND THAT JESUS OUR LORDREIGNS ON HIGHAN ETERNAL SONAN ETERNAL BLUE SKY

Hello apollus, Thank you for sharing your poem with us it was a great blessing! The answer is, yes, I for one am struggling in my prayer life. I seem to go through these dry spells quite often, only to find a well of living water, once I have learned the lesson the Lord is teaching me. I think sometimes we go through these periods because God is drawing us closer and desiring a more intimate relationship with us. I find once I've percervered through one of these difficult, trying times I feel refreshed and rejuvenated, and my heart has learned a valuable lesson. I would like to share a quote from Spurgeon about prayer that nearly brought me to tears. "A certain preacher whose sermons converted many souls recieved a revelation from God that it was not his sermons or works by all means but the prayers of an illiterate lay brother who sat on the pulpit steps pleading for the success of the sermon. We may believe after laboring long and wearily that all honor belongs to another builder whose prayers were gold, silver, and precious stones, while our sermonizings being apart from prayer are but hay and stubble." I for one covet the prayers of my brothers and sisters. Think of what God would do if we would truly pray. In Christ J-bird

What is prayer? Is it not communication with God. If Christ is our Spirit and our thoughts are governed by the Holy Spirit when we allow it, is not every thought twenty four hours a day even when we are sleeping known by God? If this is so than we are in continuous communication with God and our thoughts (prayers) are all known by God. So our life is a prayer to God if we believe it so. The only time it is not a prayer is when we don't know it or we don't acknowledge the oneness with God we truly have in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit with God the Father making His abode with us. If every thought is to be in captivity to the obedience of Christ, our fellowship with God is 24-7. Is not that what God wants? For us to Love Him with all our Heart (soul). 2 Corinthians 10:5-7 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. Are we not all Christ's. Is Christ no in all Gods son's and daughter's. He is aware of all we need or think even before we think it or need it. There is a continuous flow of thought from God to us and us to God. We just need to know it and let our hearts, our soul mind act upon it. Phl 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.1Th 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; Paul knew that he was in oneness with Christ and he never ceased in his prayers to be one with Christ and the power of Christ that was in him and his prayer was continuously for the saints that are in Christ. Ephesians 1:15-23 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. The prayer of Christ is ever before the Father that we be one even as He and the Father are one, Jesus was always in all things with the Father, even He on this earth and the Father in Heaven. So also are we and our oneness is the in the heart of Christ and Paul always. May we have the save oneness (Prayer)comunication always with out ceasing knowing every thought is thought known by God. In Christ: Phillip

thoughts (prayers) Phillip,So you never get on your knees and pray to God? You never seperate yourself from everything and get alone with God? Your 'closet' is your mind? You just 'think'? I don't understand what you are saying about prayer...What is prayer? Is it not communication with God.May we have the save oneness (Prayer)comunication always with out ceasing knowing every thought is thought known by God. :-?

Jesus also took several moments (often houres) in private for praying. :-)Personally I find it very neccesary to have certain times where I can focus on the Lord. Usually during the day you are busy with other things which need your attention. This does not mean that you forget God, but you just put your focus on something.Quiet times is putting your focus on the Lord! (praying and reading the Bible) As so far I know and see it. I've also noticed that I do feel dry if I neglect this, even tho I do pray in the morning and the evening.Just my 2 cents. :-)

Yes I get on my knees and when my closet is so full of God's presence the tears flow and I am overwhelmed by His presence at times, the rest of the time my mind is in constant communication with Jesus Christ that is in me. When I get up it me and Him starting the day, when I eat, its me and Him eating, when I go to sleep it is me and Him in restful peaceful peace unless He wants me conscious to talk with Him. Our Father is also one with each of us by the Son and the Holy Spirit is speaking all the time if we just listen and I don't have to stop what I am doing to hear, but I do try to keep my mind on Him because His mind is ours, that is my part, to know Him. How can we help every one to understand that it is not where and when you pray but who we are in Christ. I don't think Jesus was out of communication, even on the Cross. We who's minds are kept on Him, we are kept in perfect peace. Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee. Finally, I say like Paul, 2Cr 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. We can't hide, so lets embrace the knowledge of Him knowing our every thought and by the Christ in us, The Perfect which has come, that we know Him as we are known. Let us allow the in Part to be done away with. 1Cr 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.Let us grow up into Christ and take part in the perfect, Who is Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 13:11-13 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. We should press on toward the High Calling of God in Christ Jesus. Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. Let us grow up into Him and every thought and everything we do, let us do to the Honor a Glory of the Father and His Son by the Holy Spirit that is in us. In Christ: Phillip

What is prayer? Is it not communication with God.Did you mean to put the word 'not' in that statement? If you did mean to do it then you seem to be contridicting yourself.

HI GuysPrayer is obviously a private matter. I think we can all agree that prayer is not repetition. If all you had was the prayer closet, then I think you would miss God's best, if all you had was in your mind, your spirit, you would be better of than those who only had the closet, but still miss out in retiring from the world, getting quiet, alone, and being with Him. Jesus often times went of to be alone, but I agree that He would have been in constant communication with His Father........Frank

1Cr 1:20 Where [is] the wise? where [is] the scribe? where [is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? I should make it a plain question. Is communication with God prayer or is it not? In Christ: Phillip

Our closet in context of what I was saying is the mind, not a physical place to shut the door.Matthew 6:5-13 is talking about physical places.Luke has made great attention to prayer life of our Lord, I am just going through Luke and underline those passages. Our Lord Jesus has left us great example! And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.-Luke 5:16And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.-Luke 6:12And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.-Luke 9:28And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,-Luke 22:41When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart-Matthew 14:13And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.-Matthew 14:23
